UH, think hes got a manual tranny............... anyway, checking the fluid is the FIRST thing to do. You could have tossed a carrier bearing inside the torque tube. That would be a cheap part, but very labor intensive to repair. Probably is a tranny gear. There was a Z06 tranny for sale for $1500 in the parts section last week. Big horsepower and hard shifting always takes it's toll on the drivetrain. Good luck.

Ok... now if my car still drove after this happened, could it be something else? Maybe it was the driveshaft, or something? It's odd that the transmission would still engage and the car still drive after it happening.

While driving along in 4th at about 1800 RPM, suddenly this shuddering and grinding sound occurred as if I shifted without the clutch. It also sounded like I punched the clutch in, that release sound it makes if you do it wrong... and then the car wouldn't go into gear and the drivetrain jerked some.
I stopped and, still a few a miles from home, I played with the gearbox some and it ended up shifting into 3rd and 4th. I slowly released the clutch and the car went forward as normal, only beneath the shifter it sounded like a bunch of nuts and bolts were bouncing around. Awesome!
All of the gears could engage once I drove a bit in 3rd, so I coasted back at 15 MPH, the car driving normally but the damn tunnel sounded like a nuts and bolts party with all the rattles. It was like someone lost a few marbles down there.
SO... here come the questions... the car has at times had trouble shifting into and out of gear, but nothing like this has ever happened, nor have I experienced anything "alarming." I always just chalked it up to the stiff-nature of the T56 and read reports on here of other people having the same issue shifting in and out of 1st, etc. Could it just be the linkage?
The car and info that might impact the transmission:
05 C6 Z51 - 70,000 miles
Hurst Shifter
G5X3 camshaft, LT Headers, Corsa Sports, UD Pulley, Halltech Intake
Could the shifter have been the problem? Or maybe the engine mods? The cam has been in for only ~250 miles... who knows.
Do you think I need a rebuilt tranny? Or just new linkage? Or some minor maintenance? I'm freaking out over the whole possibility of having to get a full rebuild... how much does that typically run? How long does it take?
Depressed Thanks in advance though!
I think you answered your own question.

I lost a carrier bearing inside the torque tube in my manual transmission C5 (stock power levels), and it sounded a LOT like you describe, especially if you are hearing what sounds like loud 'rattles' or grinding. The tranny was fine, but the torque tube was extra-crispy.
I was out of warranty, and it was not a cheap repair. sorry.
