Default Replacement starter

I thought I saw a thread on the subject of using newer ( late 80's, 90's?) starters in the C3s, but can't seem to find it in my search. Can anyone give me some info on this. I have an '82, thought the new ones are smaller and have better output. Thanks for any help.

I recommend this unit. It solved my heat soak problems.

The hi-torque starters work fine. Have one in my 68. U can get item through Summit or GM dealer, but Summit is less. You will not be sorry. Straight bolt in.

Ditto Daina (sort of rhymes, doesn't it). Got mine from JEGS - CVR Protroque. Repeated failure of starters due to heat soak disappeared. Oh, added blanket wrap for insurance also.

I got a starter from a 97 Chevy 454 truck for my '71 big-block. $136 from autozone. It's a ministarter and weighs 8lbs vs the stock starters 24lbs. Starts MUCH better.

This only applies to the big-block. Small block late model trucks got a much heavier conventional starter. Only 454's got the neato gear reduction one.

I bought mine--a Delco mini starter--from a forum member, and according to him it's the kind used on late models Chevy and GMC 454 trucks. Perhaps the same that Zwede has? It works great, and was one of the best deals I've ever got.

I think that this is what you are looking for.
Read carefully and note that there is a different one needed for use with the 168 tooth flex plate and the 153 tooth flex plate.
I didn't weigh it before installation but it was certainly less than 10 lbs.

GM mini starter $35. Works GREAT! http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=133879

Thanks for the input everyone. Is there any easy way to know if it is a 168 or 153 tooth flexplate?
