Default Engine upgrades for a 70 454

I would like any feedback on performance upgrades for this motor. The original heads are in dire need of an overhaul. What I had in mind was to yank the old ones and replace them with something from GM Performance. Any suggestions on what heads would be a good "match" for this motor? I'm looking for a simple swap of heads with little or no other modifications, although I'm open to carburator and intake changes as well. Thanks

I sent my heads to (Heads By Rick) in hollywood Florida He has over 30 yrs experience in mods. he took my original heads and made a slight compression change and when i recieved them back I could'nt believe they were the same heads he also recommended a cam. The other mods i made were the torker II intake and edelbrock carb 1605 with elec choke, every thing else was left original since i only had 70,000 mi on the car :yesnod: Runs like a dream!!!!!!! :D

Droptop, thanks for the reply. Do you have a number for your guy in Florida? Any suggestions for new heads.

mulchie-
Which 454 do you have?
What is the port configuration?- Rectangular or oval?

Although you can mix certain heads/intakes, it's a good idea to keep the two "port matched".
This can determine which heads you are targeting.

Also, don't forget that any milling you have done will shift the port alignment between the intake & the heads. Sometimes, this causes sealing and occasionally performance problems.

If you want a copy of my invoice i can send it to you this evening from the house. or if i can fax it after lunch from my office, The invoice has the head ,cam, and pricing info on it. BTW I don't know rick personally but if you drag race anywhere in florida you will recognize his name especially if you race IHRA. You probably don't race but he does a lot of mild mods for street use from heads to complete engines. Most guys i know locally use him.... as far as new heads i don't know because this is my first vette and i wanted the modified sleeper look (stock)....
Give me a fax or email and i will get it to you

My 1970 LS5 is the original block & heads. They are oval port.

Not sure what you are asking by "what do you think."

Sorry, my mistake. They are indeed oval ports. I'd rather keep the original heads in their original condition and purchase new ones to run for a while. All I've looked at to this point is GM Perf heads.

I take it's not the original motor (or the heads have been changed) then for a 70 Corvette. I think that is what Tom is referring to. All 70 (except for a handful?) came with the LS5 which would have oval port heads.

Something I wish I had the money for is a 32 valve head set. They are made but very pricey, I never saw any mention of an intake or exhaust, if they were needed or if stock would fit.
