Re: Paint (Bill Hanna)
Bill,
I stripped the old paint completely using a chemical stripper, and then I cleaned the parts real good and wiped them with lacquer thinner.
On the gauge cluster I had to spray a thin coat of black primer first, because I couldn't make the paint stick to the almost-vertical surfaces on the sides. On the shifter plate, I sprayed the paint (3 light coats) directly on the metal.
I let the paint dry overnight and then removed the paint off the chrome highlights using a razor blade and/or a cloth or Q-tip dampened with lacquer thinner. The cloth works good on the edges, while for the raised letters and small chrome edges of the shifter plate (e.g. around the ashtray) I found that the razor blade, followed by a Q-tip, works best.
Just take your time, and you'll like the result. Good luck!

Krylon semi-flat black is a near perfect match for almost all the semi-flat black trim surfaces on and in a Corvette. It's available (off the shelf at Wal-Mart), it's cheap (less then $3 a can), it's easy to use, and it's good quality paint. Try it. You'll like it. :) :)
