Default '73 LS4 Clutch Advice

The clutch in my 73 LS4 is starting to slip in 3rd and 4th gear during WOT. I'm quite sure it's the orginal clutch and long overdue for a new one, which leads me to ask; have any of you folks replaced a clutch recently ? Now that it's winter in Michigan I've got time to get back to my repair / restoration tasks, I haven't really looked at what my options are as far as clutch replacement parts. Any experience / advice would be welcome.
Thanks,

Mike

I just put a centerforce dual friction on mine, it's only been in for about 20 miles so far so I can't give much feedback on it. The advice on this board is that they are excellent, a buddy of mine with a 72 small block car also had one and loves his as well. Deffinitly stickier then the stock clutch was just in daily driving, it has a break in period so I really haven't abused it as of yet. One thing of note though on the LS-4 possibly. According to the application guide it should be something like an 11 spline input shaft, but mine was a 26 spline shaft. My car as far as I can tell everything was original and the application guide shows the 26 spline accurate for the 73 L-82. In short I ended up using the 26 spline clutch for an L-82 on my LS-4, and ended up returning the 11 spline clutch. So if you have some time to pull the tranny you may want to look at your input shaft before ordering a clutch. Oh yea, don't be scared of a performance clutch like this, it's not any noticeably stiffer then my stocker was.

I just replaced mine a week ago. I used the Centerforce II. I only have about 10 miles, its been raining all week here.

I went with the II because I wanted more than a stock clutch and not the grabbing of the Dual.

Your 73 will take the 26 spline 11" disk.

You will do fine with a stock clutch. As long as the disk is new and not rebuilt. Hayes is also a good clutch. I like my Centerforce 2 but I had problems with the clutch geometry. The Centerforce is a pain in the butt.

I installed a Centerforce Dual Friction about 1,000 miles ago and it works great. Jegs had the best price on the clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. Some people have had to install a adjustable pivot for the clutch fork.

Hope it all works out OK.

Hi,

I have just changed the clutch in my 81 and fitted a QuarterMaster twin plate set-up. It works well once you get used to it. They can be used on big or small block cars. Expensive but the quality of the parts is excellent. I have only done a 100 or so miles with it so it will remain to be seen how long it lasts.
