Default how come...?

on the flywheel cover of a 4sp 454 there are two PITA tabs. these tabs prevent the oilpan from dropping away. so in order to drop the pan the flywheel cover must come off first, which means the 300 lb starter has to come out...

what is the point of these tabs? engineering humor? :)

THOSE 2 TABS HOLD THE FRONT LIP OF THE OIL PAN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE FLYWHEEL COVER TO FORM A SEAL. YEAH, ITS A PIA

Without those tabs the shield will push back against the flange on the crankshaft and you will swear you engine has come apart inside. When you have the shield off, trim half of the circle so you don't have to pull the starter next time, but LEAVE the tabs in place. They are needed!
