COLD AIR FOR TRI POWER WITH L-88 HOOD? FOR 1X4 CARBS: KN EXTREME LID WOULD WORK!
A THOUGHT. IF KN MADE AN EXTREME AIR LID FOR TRI POWERS, LIKE THEY DO FOR THE 14" OPEN AIR FILTERS, IT WOULD BE SUPER EASY TO GET MY TRI POWER TO WORK WITH A L-88 HOOD INDUCTION.
POP ON THE EXTREME LID, AND JUST MAKE A FOAM RUBBER SEAL (WOULD TAKE ABOUT 10 MINUTES) THAT FITS THE LID TO THE HOOD.
FOR YOU GUYS THAT HAVE A 1X4 CARB, YOU COULD DO THE SAME WITH A 14" EXTEME LID, AGAIN, MAKE A FOAM RUBBER SEAL. YOU WOULDNT HAVE TO GET THE L-88 TYPE AIRCLEANER ASSEMBLY (THAT COST ABOUT $180), AND DOESNT FILTER THAT GREAT ANYHOW
SOUND LIKE A BRIAN STORM? IF I FIND THAT KN MAKES AN EXTREME LID FOR A TRI POWER (THEY DO MAKE THE REGULAR KN FILTERS FOR TRI POWERS), YOU CAN BET ILL RIG MINE UP

damn, I JUST HIT THE KN SITE, AND NO LISTING FOR A TRI POWER EXTREME LID. I DID EMAIL THEIR TECH LINE THOUGH,...
YOU 14" AIR CLEANER FOLKS ARE GOOD TO GO THOUGH.....!

Yeah I've thought of using the K&N X lid too but the carb would still take in HOT underhood air since the sides of the filter are still exposed to the engine compartment. You could block it off but I don't think the lid flows enough CFM to use it exclusively.

DARN, HADNT THOUGHT ABOUT THAT...
UPON FURTHER RESEARCH, IVE THOUGHT ABOUT GETTING THREE SMALLER KN FILTERS, WITH THE RUBBER BASE, THAT WOULD MOUNT ON THE TRI POWERS, THEN MAKE A "BOX", WHERE THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX (WITH HOLES CUT) WOULD SEAL AT THE BOTTOM FLANGES OF THE AIR FILTERS. THE SIDES WOULD THEN SEAL AGAINST THE HOOD. I HAVE A POWER POINT DRAWING, IF ANYBODY IS INTERESTED (EMAIL MELVINJO@SOC.MIL)
I COULD MAKE THE BOX, SAY FROM A BIG TUPPERWARE CONTAINER, IF IT COULD STAND UP TO THE HEAT

This won't work for your Tri-power but I think Les is using a 14 in diameter 3 inch filter and a 1/2 inch foam spacer inside his chamber.
I was also thinking about trying a foam filter I saw. I think Accel makes it. Naturally now I can't find a listing in the catalog.
I also have tried one of those triangular filters mounted atop the L-88 air cleaner base. I remove the L-88 cage from the carb and fasten the other filter on top the L-88 air cleaner base. I then remove the L-88 air filter from the air chamber. It just fits inside the air chamber. This still provides a seal from engine compartment heat and use of the cold air chamber. It may be a little crude and may look tacky but it works for cruising.
