Gearing on a 78
Another question, what's the gearing on a stock 78? I thinking of putting in shorter gears to hopefully gain some low end grunt.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Gearing on a 78 (spiru)
Use the following website to do a little work and you can tell what your ratio is: http://www.idavette.net/tech/ratioc.htm
Change any variable and you can see how it affects your car.

Spiru,
Gearing is dependant on transmission, and engine - however nomads statement is correct - 3.55:1 was a very common ratio for the 78 corvette
Transmission.
The l-48 had four different gear possibilities:
L-48 - M-20 4spd - 3.36.1 (not available in CA)
L-48 -MX-1 (th350) - 3.08:1 (3.55 in CA)
L-48 - MX-1 (low alt?) - 3.55:1
L-82 MX-1 - 3.55:1
L-82 - 4speeds - 3.70:1
L-82- optional economy gear - 3.36:1
if you want more information you can find it at the 25th anniversary Corvette REgistry at http://www.vettefinders.com/78registry/index.html

Re: Gearing on a 78 (fauxrs)
Thanks guys. But one more thing I think my pump seal is bad, so the transmission is going to have to come out, I think this a good time to rebuild it, is it even worth trying a different gear ratio? What would be the best course of action here as far as a performance standpoint?
