Update: 70 coupe with 540 5-speed
Been a while since ive been here so thought I would let everyone know how the project turned out. Just a quick refresher..it is a 70 coupe with a AFR headed merlin 540, keisler tko 600 w/.64 od and a 3.70 rear. it engine dynoed at 718 hp at 6000 and 683ftlbs at 5100. It was still making 10hp every 100 rpm so would have probably made a little more but with the wimpy(by 427Hot Rod standards)hyd roller I did not want to risk valve float. It is a blast to drive, I drive it to work on nice days and have had it to several cruise-ins and rod -run. Ive driven it about 1500 miles so far and it has been trouble free. The things I would do differently are 1) use a different painter...it sucks to have paid this much money for a crappy paint job,he says they will fix it but I may have the car re-painted in a couple years...at least this way im not afraid to drive it anywhere although it is a bit embarassing when the first thing people do is start picking a part the paint 2) It is a bit loud with hooker side pipes and uncorked jcl baffles so I may have done somthing different with the exhaust, although it is fun setting off car alarms cruising through the grocery store parking lot...yea I drive it to the store too!3)I would have also used a steel instead of aluminum flywheel. The thing revs very quick and hits the 6200rpm limiter instantly in first and second gears making them useless. This thing gets zero traction with the 285/40-18 Nittos. I know Jim...you told me so Although it is fun shifting to third at 60 and smoking the tires.4)would have went with the.8 od instead of .6 there is too big jump between fourth and fifth. The only casualty so far is my wife was driving it, cruising down interstate at about 90 and crossed a bridge with a huge dip. I had the dual mount spring set a little too soft and the tires hit the rear fenders and left a one inch crack on both. My fault ...crappy paint job anyway. So at this point I am just going to "drive the darn thing"(Eddie70) I just want to thank everyone on here who has answered all the questions over the last four years and all the great ideas I have picked up. Eddie70 just pulled up...we are pulling the engine in his 70 vert today getting ready for a healthy LS transplant. Thanks again, Mike

You really don't want to go back to a steel flywheel. You do not need the inertia with the torque you have. I would think with the power you have a steel flywheel will still spool up very quickly also. I have the same problem as it just spools up quickly with the aluminum flywheel. I just have to be a little softer on the go pedal to try and keep traction. The car sounds awsome. Glad you are enjoying the heck out of it. That is what they are there for. I try to drive mine whenever possible. Pictures would e great.

He ALWAYS has to tell about how I was driving when the fenders got cracked.
I probably have some pics in my photobucket account. I'll go look.

Looking great Mike!!
You've now found out that big motors WILL rev!! Love that rev limiter video! You know the best thing to do with that thing is unplug it...it's just annoying!!
I don't even want to hear about not coming to BG. We need you and Mark (ML67) too!
You've done a great job with that bad boy......keep getting it out to play! That's what it's all about!

I agree, I've got a little over 100hp less than you with my 509 and the hooker sidepipes and capped sts baffles are still a little too loud.
I might mess with some hooker inserts or other universal cone inserts from summit to quiet it down. Its great at idle and on the open road but if i'm anywhere near a cement divider or store front its LOUD.
Let me know how you make out in the sound department.
I went with a steel flywheel under recommendations of a few engine builders when I was looking to build a 496. They all said the steel flywheel will help the engine get into first gear, the additional rotating mass will help the car get moving is what I was told by several different engine builders, some on east coast some on west coast.
I'm running the original rebuilt muncie 4spd. Would love to go to a 6 spd very soon. Once I stop hearing about vibrations at certain RPM's on the forum.
What valve covers are those? I got some cheapo ones like that but they didn't clear the alternator or firewall near the master cylinder.
Car looks great. Love the wheel / body color match. Awsome job.
Wish I had a garage and supportive wife like you. I practically have to barter with my gf to go for a drive with me....even though I only got the car on the road in October.
