Hood clearance on 78 with Performer RPM
I was wondering if a edelbrock performer rpm intake, edelbrock carb and edelbrock aircleaner( the normal sized triangular one) will fit under a stock 78 hood. I don't have a stock hood to try it out with. Here's a pic out of the car (that's the old qudrajet on there in the picture since I hadn't gotten the new carb yet) :flag

I know that the '78 hood has considerable more clearance than my '69, but I don't think you'll make it with that air cleaner (if it is the 1222 that it looks like). If you get a drop base air cleaner, I would think you would make it. If you're really fond of the triangle filters, Edelbrock also makes a drop base model in their Elite series (p/n 4222), but at $85, I went with a conventional round 14" filter (which just touches my HEI distributor).
PS. The 1222 adds 3.5" to the stacking height, while the 4222 only adds 2.25" in and both come with a 3" K&N filter.

Nope. That air filter pictured will not fit.Collectively the forum figured out a couple years ago that a GM drop base from a 70 BB Chevelle or 70 SS Big Block Camaro is the ultimate.Something like a 1/2 inch more drop than aftermarket drop bases.Others will probably be able to better help.

Re: Hood clearance on 78 with Performer RPM (jdharkey)
When I bought my edelbrock intake and carb for my '77 I had to buy a low profile air cleaner because there wasn't enough clearance under the stock hood. I believe there is a pic of it on my homepage.

When you find the one that fits, could you drop me a line. I checked out edelbrock.com and it states the Performer RPM (Vortec) intake does not fit under stock Corvette hood. However, it does not say this about the regular Performer (Vortec) intake. Do you think there would be a noticable difference between the two on the street?

Edelbrock says it wil not fit under stock hood , they mean with a stock air cleaner setup. I have the RPM Air Gap in mine that is taller the Performer RPM,
you have to use a low profile air cleaner or a drop base.
I had a Performer on it before and there is a big difference in performance especially at high RPM's. If your engine is stock then stick with the Performer

OK, you can fit the RPM Manifold and the Edel Carb (or a Holley 4150/60) under the stock hood - BUT!!!!!
....you need an Edelbrock Pro Stack aircleaner as well!
Other ones don´t fit properly.
I once used an standard 14" round Aircleaner with a 2" Element but lowered the Aircleaner base on a hydraulic press for about 2" also!
Its up to your ability and imagination - just try it!
