Default Edelbrock IAS shocks for 68-82 -- they DO exist!

I just got an email back from the Edelbrock folks. Checked Summit and the parts are simply listed as 'shock', are on back order, and are $82.99 (if I recall correctly) apiece.

Hi. I notice you don't make IAS shocks for 68-82 Corvettes. Is there a
plan to do this or will a shock for a different application work?

Wow, Jim. Thanks for having the tenacity to rough them up a bit on this. Wonder why Edelbrock hides this fact?

Yeah, I dunno. I sent him an email back asking why it's not in their app guide, I'll let ya know when he responds. They might have _just_ started making them.

Just got an email back from Edelbrock -- He says that the part #'s are very new and that's why they haven't been listed. Anyhow, can't wait to get me a set, I love these shocks.

Funny thing...while watching one of the automotive shows (TNN or Speedvision, can't remember which) ol' Vic hisself says they got IAS shocks for '63 on up 'Vettes. I'm sure his production department wouldn't want to make the boss look stupid so no doubt they do or will exist.

What is ias and why are they supposed to be so good, versus bilstein, konis. etc.

The idea behind the IAS (Inertia Active Valve) is that it has an internal valve that is referenced to the shock housing mounted to the car. As long as the car does not have an up/down movement the valve is in the open position making a soft shock. This is for road bumps and pot holes. The car is 'stationary' (in a up/down aspect), and the wheel moves.

Once the car exhibits body roll or brake dive the shock housing moves up/down and the valve closes, making for a very stiff shock.

This, in theory, makes for a performance shock in turns and braking, and a comfy luxo shock over bumpy roads.

Does it work in real life? Dunno, but hopefully someone on the forum will get a set and report.

This is great news, I put a set of these on the 86 Z-51 and love them, i was really wanting a set of these for the 73 but I didn't see them available. Keep us informed of what you find out.

Hi Jim
Would be interested how they perform....
What shock do you have currently on your car?

Mystery shocks on the front and auto-zone cheapo's on the back (needed them BAD and grabbed what I could). Want HAL QA1's but can't justify the $$$. Wouldn't mind Tokico's (heard great things) but don't know where to get them. I've ridden in a late-model Camaro before and after (from good Bilstein's, not cheapo shocks at all, to the Edelbrock IAS setup) and I was very, very impressed. I'll be rebuilding my front suspension in the not too distant future and will be putting a full set of IAS's on then. I have tha 7-leaf rear spring and those cheapo shocks REALLY bite (but still better than what was on there before! :) I'm curious how they would act with fiberglass rear springs. Once I get the shocks and before I put them on my car I'll probably dig up someone in the Dallas area with a fiberglass rear spring to put them on their car temporarily so we can see how they work controlling the infamous 'bounce'.. I do like fiberglass setups, and my guess is that inertia valve might REALLY solve the bounce.
