Are you talking about that little cut in the corner so that the mat will fit up and around the area where the gas pedal is so the your heel, when properly placed behind the gas pedal, will not wear a hole in the carpet because it is protected by the floor mat?

I don't know either.

I believe that the notch defines the male side of the car from the female side of the car...

Go figure :bs

Good question, mine has a more pronounced "notch".
I just put it down as another of life's little mysteries (like "where do flies go in winter"?).

I think it is so that the mat will fit up the high beam switch without riding up on the floor side. Gives the mat a bending point in a tight area.
Just a thought

Don't let that e bay scam artist see this post. The next thing on his list of options will be "notched floor mats" :)

On my 1978 it's on the passenger side, and the notch helps the mat lay better on the floor. Fit great, actually. can't see how it would fit without the notch.

I've always wondered if the notched one went on the drivers side or passengers side!
It seems to fit better on the passenger side, so that is where I've got it.
You mean I've had it on the wrong side all these years???

I think it goes on the passenger side. If you look at the floor there is a hump in the floor pan where the notch in the mat is suppost to be.

Agree w/ everyone who says it goes on the pass. side where mine is.

For those that need pics., it looks like it is time to FeedVaal.

It does go on the passengers side in my opinion. It's there to clear the "bump" located next to the transmission tunnel. Chuck

You crack me up! Thought everyone knew that on a C3, the female side is the top side, all shiney and clean, and the male side is the bottom side, all dark, dirty, and greasey, with all those weird parts sticking out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chuck,

Agreed. On automatic cars, there is a wider transmission tunnel and a narrower passenger's side footwell. At St. Louis they actually cut the floorpan and installed a small piece to clear part of the auto trans. 4 speed cars have narrower tunnels. Properly designed replacement carpet will differ in the shape of the passenger's side in order to accomodate this.
As aftermarket companies don't want to distinguish between auto and 4 speed cars for mats, they make the auto ones and the 4 speed cars can suffer with more of their carpet showing.

Patrick
