FOR ALL OF YOU LOOKING FOR A THEFT DETERRENT
Okay, heres how it goes. go buy a 2 way switch from radio shack, or an electronics store. good. now, find the wires leading to your coil-- splice a long wire of the same gauge onto it, then run it through a hole in your firewall. once inside the cab, you should be able to run it underneath your dash, preferrably hidden. hook up the system. you should now have a wire leading from the engine compartment(The one that used to go to the coil) to the cab, through a switch, and now back to the coil(Where it came from) You now have a way of disconnecting your coil from your engine, and it cannot be bypassed without soemone popping the hood and looking at the engine over for a LONG TIME. if you route the wires right, they will be hidden from the coil to the cab. when you want to park your car, flip the switch. if someone gets in, they cannot start it. the starter will run, but it will not fire, so it will cast suspicion off the power/battery wiring since the starter can be heard. doesnt get much better than that. :jester

To elaborate on that scheme, if you don't smoke (and we all know you shouldn't) why not use the lighter for the switch?
Pushed in = complete circuit, pulled out = open circuit. :smash:

What I did is gut the internals of the cig lighter housing and put in a push on/off switch. Plug the outer lighter part back into it's proper place and it covers the switch. Most fingers will fit down into the housing to activate the switch.

Or the other one I tried that worked well was to get the old style dimmer switch. The kind that mounts on the floor. Mounted on the firewall just takes one kick and it's in use. It only takes a couple of times and your foot knows just were to look.

Another good one:
Buy a matching coil wire to what you already have (coil to distributor). Rip out the wire and the clips at the end. You have a wire that looks perfect, but the car will not start. No way to tell. It's been saving Corvettes for a long time.

How about save yourself the trouble and buy a grant pop off steering wheel?
wouldn't they bring their own steering wheel when they actually do the job :jester

WARNING WILL ROBINSON WARNING
I would add an inline fuse to that circuit to prevent an accidental short and possible fire :mad

Great idea. If a thief is after your car they may watch to see what you do when you get in your car and if you do anything out the ordinary.
I like the idea of the floor mounted high beam swicth , but it has to be hidden under the carpet, because if the thief knows anything about Vettes and then sees a floor switch, he'll know how to start your Vette.

I have to agree about adding a fuse into the circuit. I did the coil wire to the switch trick in my 68 Chevelle, and it worked like a champ, until the short circuit. Fried my engine harness and some of the other wires in the engine compartment. Would have been a hell of a lot cheaper and more convenient had I added the fuse to begin with.

Keep in mind that professionals use tow trucks. I keep mine chained, through a wheel and the suspension, to a LARGE eyebolt in the concrete when it's parked in the drive. Switches are great, and definitely slow down most thieves. On a similar note, does anyone use those stainless collars that lock over the key assembly? Where are they available? Thanks.

I have been wondering the same thing about the steering column lock...DOES anyone know where I can get one from? Also What size fuse should be used in the in-line fuse configuration ?

Re: FOR ALL OF YOU LOOKING FOR A THEFT DETERRENT (dsagers)
okay, so what gauge wire and what fuse size?
would the extended coil wire impede performace?
i'm assumming you can leave the switch on all the time until you feel
that it's not a safe environment to do so?

I don't think anyone would steal it then... :jester
They would be afraid of the other bubby fixes you have in store for them :D

The failure rate on older Sears garage door openers is rather high these days....so taking one of the receivers and the hand units, it's easy to make an anti theft device with a latch relay......on the computer or just the ignition or even the starter.....
turn on the ignition switch, then hit the transmitter button to activate the receiver/relay burried under the dash.....

at the end of the day if a pro wants your car it will probably go!
shut downs to stop starting will keep amateurs from taking it but will probably incite damage , so at the end of the day - lock it up in a secure area with a good security system .
