Default Recall on 1977 "HORN ASSEMBLY:BUTTON:RING"

I've remember posts about those brushed aluminum horn buttons being on early '77s. I thought this recall (dated 10/12/1979) listed on http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov was interesting:

Defect Summary:
THE INVOLVED VEHICLES HAVE STEERING WHEEL CENTER HUBS WHICH FAIL TO CONFORM TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 107, "REFLECTING SURFACES". THE HORN BUTTON CAP AND THE LOCK LEVER HAVE A BRUSHED CHROME FINISH. THE SURFACE REFLECTIVITY OF THIS FINISH ON SOME OF THESE HORN BUTTON CAPS AND LOCK LEVERS IS APPROXIMATELY TWICE THE MAXIMUM REFLECTIVITY ALLOWED BY THE STANDARD.

Corrective Summary:
DEALER WILL REPLACE THE CAP AND LEVER WITH PARTS PAINTED TO MATCH THE INTERIOR TRIM COLOR AT NO COST TO OWNER.

Very interesting, but I am confused. Does this mean the horn button and the telescoping ring? My horn button is black, and the ring aluminum. I didn't know of any vettes with chrome steering wheel parts.
Has my telescoping ring been recalled? It would be very funny to go to the dealer and see if they honor a 22 year old recall.

Paso, very neat. You car's original owner obviously ignored Chevy's recall notice to replace the horn button. Cars 00001 to 13503 were delivered with the brushed aluminum horn button and an interior color painted tele locking ring. Cars 13504 to 18637 had both the aluminum horn button and an aluminum tele locking ring. Beginning with car 18638, both the button and the ring were painted interior color at St Louis. I think the recall only called for replacing the button, although Chevy also changed the ring in production. Of course, this only applied to tilt-tele equipped cars, as the standard column 77 cars used the 1976 setup with the Vega wheel.

Jim, see the reply to Paso and check your VIN. I think the recall only involved changing the button.

My '77 has the aluminum button and aluminum locking ring. I like the way it looks and I plan to keep it that way.

Ganey didn't you post that the brushed chrome horn ring is as good as 10 hp:) over the painted ones. As the painted ones weigh so much more:) That's why your offering to honor the old recall I bet:)

I didn't think about it until just now, but I would imagine that they threw all of those brushed buttons & T/T rings right in the trash.

Oh the humanity :nonod:

I have the brushed aluminum cap, but have never been blinded by it. My car was built in Sept or Oct 1976.
