Anyone With A ZZ4 In Calif. Passed Emmissions Test ?
Would Like to put one in my 81 but am concerned with passing the test.I would think it would run cleaner than my 77000 mile original engine but Chevy dealer says the catalog shows it for older cars only. Except for no EGR what else would cause it to fail? Thanks.

My 68 w/ZZ3 put out only 70 PPM of hydrocarbons (HC) a few years back. Needless-to-say, it passed with flying colors. Make sure the visual test will pass and you'll be home free.

When I get my ZZ4 I'm going to use the stock intake system. I've heard from a lot of people that they'll pass emissions.

Been there done that......you may pass intell its your "LUCKY" year and you have to go to a "Test only" place. Then they go over your car with a freeking magnifing lens, I would wait if I were you, inless you can build it
with all the smog equipment that came with your original car. BTW that
ZZ4 sure would love your stock exhaust which they check for a well :(

You put anything in there that doesn't look completely stock... they're going to know right away and REQUIRE you to go to a special state inspection station.
Then they're going to try to ruin that beautiful beast by requiring you to put every piece of smog crap on it... including EGR, catalytic converter, air pump, stock exhaust etc.
They're even going to check your gas cap to see that it meets REQUIRED pressure specs. All of it at your cost. My suggestion: Find an address in a California county that's smog exempt and register it there. Good Luck.

Yeah I was kind of worried I would have problems. Sometimes its enough to make me want to sell it and get a C4 or C5 to get the performance I would like. Ya gotta love Ca. and the smog rules!
