Default Engine bogs down at all speeds!

Need some help guys. I just replaced the points on the '73 L-48 350 smallblock (stock) two nights ago. I drove the car to work (approx. 13 miles) the next morning and the car ran fine. I get into the car to drive home after work and the car bogs down under acceleration (normal, not heavy). It also bogs down when going up slight inclines (hills) on the way home. Even when driving on the side of the road I ahd to feather the gas a whole bunch jsut to get the car home and avoid a tow charge. This same scenario happened this summer. Got any ideas? Carb rebuild?

I agree with masterdave, sounds like the distributor moved on ya. Double check your timing whenever you get a chance...I think you will find your problem.

Check the accelerator pump on the carb. See if it squirts fuel when you pump the pedal.

Dear John in Dayton,

Sorry to hear your having engine problems. Carburetor? Gee, that's the last thing I get into when I'm having trouble. In my experience, the more you leave a carburetor alone, the better off you are. Here is a short list of things you might want to check on (if you haven't already).

1) Did the points come out of adjustment after you put in new ones?
2)Vacum line disconnected or loose somewhere from crawling over engine?
3) Loose spark plug wire, or spark plug, or fouled plug? Spark plug wire grounding out?
4)Condenser loose or grounded out?
5)Air filter or fuel filter clogged?
6)Distributer cap cracked or loose?
7)Coil wire loose?
8)Water or moisture in distributer cap, or in gas?
9) Any water mixing with your oil?

I hope you find the problem and it is nothing serious. Other members have suggested checking your distributer lockdown and the timing. Carbs do mess up,but you might want to eliminate other possibilities before you blame it for your lack of power. Best holiday wishes, please post us when you find the problem.

You mentioend that it did the same thing last summer. Did it fix itself that time or how did you get it fixed? In addtion to what's already been suggested, you might check fuel pressure. A fuel pump that's barely pumping or a clogged fuel filter will have you running out of gas whenever you ask for more fuel than it can provide. A clogged or collapsed exhaust will also behave like you described but I don't think that would have have fixed itself last summer.

John -
1. Replace the fuel filter.
2. Check and set dwell. Dwell should be 30-31 degrees.
3. After dwell is set to 30-31, check and verify timing to specs.

I'll bet the car will run great after you run through the 3-step checklist.

Thanks for the ideas guys. My friend set the dwell on Sunday night when we replaced the points. Not sure what he set it to. Also have to scheck the timing again. I 'll check to see if the distributor is locked down and not "moving". I'll also check the fuel filter and buy some dry gas.
Regarding having the same problem last summer, this is the first time I've tried to drive it since then. Had the same issue with the car then. Drives fine for a bout 1/2 hour. Park it for a while and then get these "bog down" problems.
