Questions on the 400 SBC
My 406 block is casting # 330817, and was cast in 1973. That means it is a 2 bolt main, probably used in a passenger car.
I'm wondering what cars used these blocks in 1973/1974 and what the torque curve looked like. Also, any other information about the 400 small blocks would be great, like compression ratios, cams, etc. Are there any web pages devoted to the history of the 400 small block?
I'd like to use that info to establish a baseline from which to aim. For instance, if the factory engine had 300 ft-lbs of torque at XXXX rpm, what should the changing of X, X, and X do to the curve, etc.
Thanks!
Jeff

Re: Questions on the 400 SBC (thejaf)
I have a '74 Monte Carlo that has a 400SB. Casting# is 3951509. It came with a 4bbl. and is listed in the original sales brochure as 180-hp Turbo-Fire. 2bbl. is listed at 150-hp. That's all I know.

Jeff;
In full size Chevrolet passenger cars in '73 and '74, the 400 came with a 2-barrel carb and was rated at 150 hp at 3200 rpm and 295 lbs. ft. torque at 2000 rpm. Compression ratio for both years was 8.5:1. That's all the info I have on stock 400s for those years, however, if you're interested I also have some enthusiast-magazine buildup articles that deal with that engine. E-mail me if that would be useful.
