Yes it does and they like to fail. Yes, you can change it over(they even have an HEI tach drive dist, but I believe they are about $500). You could get a used mech tach drive dist. I don't know if the gauge faces are interchangeable though.

Paul what fails on these? I always had the older cable driven tachs and had very good luck with them.

Re: Does the 75 vette have Electronic tach....
Yes, the electronic ones do fail, or rather, they don't work right. :smash: Mine does strange things when various electronics are turned on and off in the car. For instance, in park with the air fans on, the needle wanders all over the place. Pop it in gear though (or turn the air fan off) and starts working fine.
Really annoying. I've been debating whether or not to replace it with something more reliable (like a mechanical one). However, I think I'll wait until I get around to swapping the tranny out.
Cheers,
Tony

Probably 8 out of 10 times it will be the "circuit board" behind the tach that fails. Other problem could be a dirty or broken connection for example at that "tach filter". It seems when one is operating correctly OTHER than the rpms, when the car is "OFF" the needle should float to about 700-1100rpms. As soon as the ignition is turned to "on", the needle should go straight to zero. :seeya  :smash:
