Default Ignition Sheilding

I've got to add ignition sheilding to a 68 small block, all of it was removed. Rather than buying the distributor cover, verticals, and plug covers, would just a distributor cover and braided plug wires be OK? I noticed the BB cars use the braided wires and I've seen SB braided plug wire sets for sale. Anyone else use these?
Also, If I wanted to fabricate a custom cover, are there any special requirements other than grounding it and making sure it surrounds all the high voltage components Distributor, coil?

Anybody?
I see a lot of engine photos without sheilding on this site. Did you guys just leave the radio out?

Mine is supposed to have the shield around the distributor and braided wires over the top of the covers. Even without it, the radio works fine.

The chromed steel shielding was mainly for aesthetics by my understanding. Most wires you buy today are spiral core, which does the same as the old solid core wires with the braiding. As long as you have spiral core wires, it doesn't matter about the shielding. :smash:

I have the top cover and down standing with the side cover above the starter. The covers are to shield the plug wires from causing radio interference. if the wires are routed over the top the may not cause the problem.

The shielding was mostly for the cars beside you.. In those days most radio was AM and they picked YOUR engine because there is no metal to shield the RF noise. That is also why the antenna is on the back. FM radio isn't affected by engine ignition.

The supression core wires sold today do away for the shielding need. Also the braid covered wires can rob power from the wires and isn't a great thing to have. I bought mine mostly for the look but I now found this out.
The braid acts as the other plate of a capacitor and dumps it to ground. This reduces the power available going through the wire.
I have heard popping on my FM radio with a harley next to me.
