DIC oil change

Not 100% sure but I think it computed by driving style with regards to the engines performance ie. time in rpm bands fuel consumption etc.
Probably has a program written in already and your driving style is compared to the program.

The oil life monitor does not measure anything about the oil. The oil life monitor uses a series of algorithms which take in to account ignition cycles along with engine revolutions and engine temperature.
Based on driving conditions and habits, the mileage at
which an oil change will be indicated can vary considerably.
Also yes, there is a cushion built in to the calculations.
This system is well tested and has a proven track record in Corvette C5's and C6's. One of the engineers that worked on the development of the system was a member here for a long time.

I always let my oil life monitor count down to zero before changing the oil, in fact I've often reset it and continued for another 2-3k!
I get my used oil analyzed after every oil change, and in every single report they've told me the oil was still suitable for continued use and there was very little contamination in it. So those of you that are still stuck in the 3k oil change mentality, you need to get into the 21st century and trust the oil life monitor!

Synthetics are good for a lot longer than regular oil.

With today's quality oils, it's not insurance, it's wasted money (especially at Mobil 1 prices).
FWIW, I grew up with, and continued for decades to live by, the change-every-3000 view. I finally did some research on actual used oil
analysis results, and concluded I was being stupid with my money. I have better things to be stupid with my money over. I've converted to the "change at 0%" view.

If the GM engineer's, that built and designed the engine, wanted us to change oil early 'cheap insurance' they would state so in the manual.

Engine Oil Life System
When to Change Engine Oil
Your vehicle has a computer that lets you know when to
change the engine oil and filter. This is based on
engine revolutions and engine temperature, and not on
mileage. Based on driving conditions, the mileage at
which an oil change will be indicated can vary
considerably. For the oil life system to work properly,
you must reset the system every time the oil is changed.
Z06 models have a racetrack-ready dry sump engine
lubrication system. This high-performance system
operates differently than a standard engine lubrication
system and requires a special procedure when changing
the engine oil and filter. See Engine Oil on page 5-17.
When the system has calculated that oil life has
been diminished, it will indicate that an oil change is
necessary. A CHANGE ENGINE OIL message will come
on. Change the oil as soon as possible within the
next 600 miles (1 000 km). It is possible that, if you are
driving under the best conditions, the oil life system
might not indicate that an oil change is necessary for
over a year. However, the engine oil and filter must
be changed at least once a year and at this time
the system must be reset. Your dealer/retailer has
trained service people who will perform this work using
genuine parts and reset the system. It is also important
to check the oil regularly and keep it at the proper
level

I was not surprised when I had my last change done at the dealer to find a sticker on the windshield corner reminding me to change it in 3k miles, ha!
