Default Ring and Pinion Question

What is the difference in the different rear ring and pinion between a 10 bolt, 12 bolt, and our wonderful corvette rearends? I was at the auto parts store the other day and saw a 3.73 ring and pinion or for $175. I don't remember if it was for a 10 or 12 bolt rearend but that seems cheaper than what I have seen in the Zips or MidAmerica catalogues. The link to the Zips is: http://store.yahoo.com/zipproducts/s...--pinions.html Why are the corvette ones so much more expensive?

I can't speak to the 79 and earlier diff's but you should go with a Dana/Spicer replacement set for 80-82 vettes. Exact replacement.

There is no similarity between any 10/12-bolt and the 'Vette 63-79 differential. Also, there are many variations of the 10-bolt and at least two on the 12-bolt (car or truck) so you just can't go out and buy a 3.73 for a 10-bolt and expect it to work unless you like to chance the odds. And there is no 3.73 'Vette gearset. It's a 3.70:1 ratio for the IRS rear. Finally, you can buy cheaper Corvette gears through Jeg's or Summit.

Maurice, Get the part number from ZIP or Mid America and call SummitRacing or JEGS, I'm sure they can give you better pricing than the corvette speciality catalogs.

I saw that, it just seems to me that if they are similar, one doesn't cost more than the other to make, why do they mark them up so much.

The other thing to look at is the economics of it. There are more 10 and 12 bolt rears than Corvette rears. They sell more 10 and 12 bolt gears so they are cheaper. The Corvette 10 bolt rear uses a different size ring gear than the other two. As for making them I would suspect they are probably made the same just a supply and demand for the gears. Toms does make 12 bolt for the Vette but it is expensive and requires some mods to the case. It uses the 12 bolt carrier but it fits the Vette case

Thanks for the tip! They are about $100 less there.

Ahhh, thank you. That is what I was wondering.
