Default Vapor Canister... need some help here guys.

Ok I am seriosuly at ends with what exactly a vapor canister does? I am just finishing the enigne comparmtent on my 73 vette, and am re-installing all new vacum hosing and came across the canister. There is only 1 tube running into it when I know there should be 2. So, what exactly does it do, and where do the hoses coming out of it lead to?

Thanks guys!

Michael

Mine just sits there.

Some previous owner cut the hoses. :D

It's actually an emmisions thing that doesn't hurt horsepower, as I understand it.

One hose comes from the gas tank, and the other goes to the carb. the canister absorbs fuel vapors while the engine is off, then burns them when you start up.

If my car has this canister, does that mean that it origionally came with the Emissions control equipment? I hope not becuase I don't have any of it! Also will connecting this have any impact on imroving fuel efficiency?

Thanks again guys!

Yes, your car had emissions equipment. I know it should have had the vapor cannister, PCV valve, I believe the air pump, not sure about EGR and EFE, but I think it had both of those as well.

Wait, just saw you're from Toronto. I have no idea what Canadian cars had.

I just replaced my Vapor Cannister last month what fun that was !!!!!!

Bottomline it should be connected, because if it is not you will smell gas fumes all the time in your garage (NOT GREAT FOR YOUR HEALTH OR SAFETY).

On a Qjet there is a dedicated connection for the evaporation cannister.

I have an Edelbrock 1406 and after talking to everyone, including Edelbrock. I connected the cannister to the Full Vacuum at Idle port on the front carb and no gas smell and everything works fine.

Just my 2 cents !!!!!!!!!!!!
