If the pump works OK when you add fluid, then the pump is probably OK. This doesn't mean it doesn't have a leak as well as anywhere else in the system. I also have a small leak and need to dig into it someday.

First off find out where the leak is. I spray brake cleaner or degreaser all over the power steering system, then scrub it and blow it clean with compressed air. Then let it sit over night and see where it is leaking from. If it has not leaked overnight, then go out for a quick ride and inspect again. It could be as easy as replacing a hose in the system.
Good luck with it.

on my 73 i had changed the pump, slave cylinder, control valve, hose going to and from pump....still leaked from the connections at the hoses to pump...finally gave up and just added fluid every once and awhile...if the steering feels fine, and not like you are driving without power steering, then your pump should be O.K...
