Default Transmission still leaking, any suggestions?

350 tranny had a small leak which seem to be seaping through the
pan gasket. Replaced the gasket (what a mess!!), but still have a leak.
:(

It looks like it is coming through where the linkage is attached, but is
difficult to tell the exact source.

Any suggestions? I did not use a sealant per the auto parts guys suggestion as well as the instructions on the box the gasket came in.

Thanks.

I believe there is a seal that goes around the shift lever. have you tried replacing that?

Are you sure it's not coming from above the pan (like the speedo cable, vacuum modulator, etc.)?

What kind of a gasket did you use?

FWIW, the last time I worked on mine I had a neoprene gasket (from the B&M shift kit) and a cork gasket (that came with the filter).
I used the cork (no sealant) and haven't had any problems.
I guess I don't trust the neoprene type too much.

Oh, you may not want to cut up your pan, but I installed a drain plug in mine for future changes.

There is a seal around the shifter rod that could be causing the leak. It' would be easy enough to replace I would think.

Quite often the seal at the linkage leaks, then runs toward the front corner and then drips down so that it looks as if the pan gasket is leaking. I replaced my pan gasket twice before I figured out it was the linkage seal. To check it, remove the linkage arm and clean around the linkage shaft and then let it sit for a little while and then check again. You will probably see where your fluid is coming from. You will probably have to get the seal at a trans shop. Pry it out with a screwdriver and tap the new seal in. Seems to be a common problem. Hershey :chevy

my leak was coming from the speedo cable housing. It was leaving a real BIG puddle. All the time I was thinking it was coming from the pan gasket :mad I still think I have a very small leak from the pan though. I have heard that the pan may be warped and to rectify this once and for all, buy a new pan ! VettePaul.

Thanks to all who replied!!

The speedo cable is nice and dry, but I suspect that the shift linkage
is the culprit. Have not seen anything in my Haynes manual or other
info on this particular gasket.

Hershey, your description sounds like it is a fairly easy fix, do you
have any details? Does the pan need to be emptied again to fix?

Thanks.

The linkage seal is a little metal ring with a rubber seal on the inside. Just a standard seal. It is pretty easy to change. You could drain the tranny, or just let the fluid run out a little when you change the seal. You just have to make sure that when you replace the seal you drive it in straight.
