Door Springs breaking-any suggestions?
On my wife's 76 I have tried 3 times in 2 years to put replacement springs on her doors. Everytime the spring has snapped after a couple of door closings, the last one on the first try. The placement seems straightforward and they match the pictures and the placement of the factory ones on my 78. Has anyone else had this problem? She is getting tired of the door hitting her shin. Thanks.

The fact that the replacement spring broke almost immediately implies an abnormal load being put on it. I would suspect the mounting bracket is not truly parallel.

Hi..
I replaced the door spring on the drivers side this past summer.
I followed the instructions, and everything "looked" like it was in place.
However, when I went to close the door, it would bind on the spring.
That little wheel would hit the spring dead center.
If I had pushed a little on the door it most likely would have broken
the spring.
The problem was, that I did not have the spring snapped into the slot
on the hinge. You can't easily see this.
I simply took a pry bar and helped twist the spring, so that the "wheel"
would pass by on the correct side of the spring.
As the wheel fully loaded the spring, I heard a snap, and the spring went
into place.
It's been working fine since.
The spring came from Zip.

Also, make sure those "star" or "corrugated" wheels turn. If there frozen in place or "rusted" to where they won't turn, these can also cause door springs to break. These also get loaded up with paint too over the years.
