See if you can't find a reducer. It will couple one size hose to the next size smaller. Then use a short piece of the smaller hose to hook to the thermostat housing. Don't "Bubba" it unless you have absolutely no choice.

how about wrap a layer or two of inner tube? got an old bicycle around?
cut it slightly narrower than needed and you'll never be able to see it.
