There have been several posts on winter storage lately. Until the time when I went to commercial heated storage, I would remove the battery from the car, cover the car and leave it parked outside. For two of those years I left the battery in the basement on the concrete floor. Trickle charged it once a month for 24 hours. Lost two batteries that way. Just went dead by spring. Brand new batteries fortunately replaced under warranty. I blamed the product but a fellow Corvette owner suggested storing the battery on 1/2" plywood. I did so the following year and no problem! I have never figured this out but others have mentioned since that they lost batteries to concrete floors. Urban legend? Or is there some basis in fact?

Fact....learned it over 30 years ago.(when I was 14) Something to do with the earth's polarization or something. Someone will set us straight on why, I forgot.

My Father always told me not to leave batteries on a concrete floor. It will ruin them, this is true.

14.1. Storing a battery on a concrete floor will discharge them.

A hundred years ago when battery cases were made of porous materials such as wood, storing batteries on concrete floor would accelerate the discharge. Modern battery cases are made of polypropylene or hard rubber. These cases seal better, so external leakage-causing discharge is no longer a problem, provided the top of the battery is clean. Temperature stratification within large batteries could accelerate the internal “leakage” or self-discharge if the battery is sitting on a cold floor in a warm room or is installed in a submarine.

i don't know why,but i lost a battery,sitting in a warm basement on a concrete floor several years ago.it was for my boat and was not even a year old at the time,come spring it wouldn't take a charge and tested dead.so i always put a battery on a couple 2X4's.

Not true. When I work on small aircraft, we had a battery we used for testing and it always sat on the shop floor (concrete) when not in use. I remember saying one day after the battery sat for almost a year without moving it "I hope this works its been sitting on the concrete for a long time" and it cranked a 540 CID aircraft engine like it was brand new.
