Default Comp Cams Xtreme Energy or Magnum series cam

I would like to get my Vette a Christmas present of a cam swap. But cannot decide between theComp Cams XE268H or the Magnum 270H.
My vette is a daily driver but I want the extra power when I need it.

Does anyone have any opinon between the 2 cams?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I know this is not exactly the cams you're looking at but;
I got the XE262 and ended up with more of a lope at idle than I wanted. Runs great, but with a stock torque convertor I'm not sure that I made the best choice. The verdict won't be in until the transmission change that I hope happens this winter is complete.

I talked to the guy at comp cams, and he said the XE-262-H was a GREAT choice for the 8.5:1 comp (L-48 people like my self) and stock converters. The XE-268-H or ANYTHING above that is favoring higher(2000+) stall and 9.0:1+ compression. I really want to get the XE-262-H for X-mas. I like the 110 LCA gives a good nice, agressive lope.

I really do not understand the problem so many seem to have with the "lope" on a 262 cam. I run a XE284 on my Z28 with a 383 and 10.5:1 CR and get a small lope but nothing that's going to vibrate your teeth out. Also, I pull about 12-14 Hg at manifold. Now, yes, I have to keep the idle set a little higher (900-1000) which is higher than the stock 750 even with my manual tranny to avoid stalling mishaps, but I do not see this as a major problem. I would understand if you want more low end power, but I just don't see a small lope as being an issue.

A mild lope would not bother me. It makes the vette sound and look good.

I have a 2000 stall and 10:1 compression so either cam should be OK with my car I think.

But will all my vacum accessories work OK with either cam?

As I said, I'm pulling 12-14 at manifold with an XE284 and the idle set at 900-1000. I don't see how you could have problems unless you set your idle low.

Thanks 79MakoL82 I wasn't sure what the min. vacum I need to operate all the accessories correctly would be.

Thanks Aaron for the DesktopDyno numbers. Looks like they have about the same power potential.

I am running a 2000 stall turbo 350 auto with a 3.55 rear end. Will I still have plenty of low end power for a daily driver with the XE268 cam.

Thanks

David

I have the 268 with stock pistons and heads. It doesn't idle very well until it warms up, but other than that, it runs great.

The Magnum series has been around for a long time (10 years maybe but I am probably wrong). The Xtreme Energy cams are new within the last couple of years. They have newer lobe and ramp designs.

With your compression, stall, and other engine setup, I think you would be very happy with the XE268.

BTW: This is not the same cam as the 268H in the above post. There is a XE268 and a 268H. Two different cams.

so david, what is the max shift rpm?
are you after top speed?
Hill climbing?
autocrossing?
drag racing?
burn outs?
bad gas mileage?
0-60
0-90
0-30
will you shift by hand?

I am looking for the quickest 0-90 mph cam if possible with the present engine setup except for the cam and springs. Mostly for 1/8 mi or 1/4 mi times. But I do drive it to work on the highway about 25 miles everyday.

I have the adjustable modulator on my performance built turbo 350 to play with shift points but when drag racing is needed I manually shift the tranny. I presently manually shift at 5000 rpm due to the present cam limitations.

for 30-90 any of the big cams would be great!
for 0-90 i vote for the xe262.

if i were to buy a new cam i would try the solid version of the xe262. might be fun to shift at 6500 to 7000 once in a while.(there is always another cam to try)

happy holidays :seeya

From what I am reading from all the post it looks like I should consider the XE262 for my daily driver.

Thanks for all the knowledge and replies from your own experiences.

Too much trial and error gets expensive!
Feeding on the Corvette forum knowledge is great.

Thanks!

David
