Default '80 REALLY Loud with True Duals and Dynomax Super Turbos

OK. Be careful of what you wish for you may get it... This applies to my situation. I installed the true duals expecting more noise but when I really stand on it, the car howls! I mean, it is almost too noisy (is there such a thing?). With the new 700R4, she lopes around 1500rpm at 45mph (P265/60R 15's and fresh set of Dana/Spicer 3.54's) and humms to the point of rattling my teeth.

Should I go for a 'quieter' muffler now that I'm running 2.5" duals from the manifolds to the mufflers or just 'enjoy' it until Florida re-instates inspections and I have to wipe the cobwebs off of my converter?

Not kidding here. The car is really a noisy beast now and almost too noisy for my tastes.

I would try an X pipe. It will lower the overall volume and reduce the drone at 1500. It is also supposed to get you more power.

I have the same setup you do except headers instead of exhaust manifolds (and an X pipe)

It hums a bit .. but nothing you can't have a conversation over. At highway speeds (3500 RPM) you don't even hear the exhaust until you punch it.

Loud is chambered exhaust. I have headers, 2.5" exhaust and super turbos and love the sound. I drive with my 700R4 in 3rd vs OD when I'm driving around town. I only use OD when I'm on the highway, I like the throttle response better in 3rd vs. OD.

I am glad you posted this because I will be installing the same set-up with the exception of I have the Dyno-Max Cer Coated Headers. I wish I could hear yours before I have mine installed.

Just this spring I installed the Dynomax super turbos, mind you my 1980 l-48 is stock with the exception of the CAT that I removed
The car is louder then with the stock mufflers I had on before, but does going to a true dual setup really make it that louder ?
I have to admit that I was hoping with the removal of the CAT and original mufflers that It would have be much louder.

It can not be louder than flowmaster 40's I know I went from true dual flowmaster 40's to the dynomax super turbos, it is much more docile sounding now.

I guess it also dpends on what you consider loud, I know that I can hear my radio now, versus b4 when it was just there to fill the hole in the console.

I have the same setup with flowmasters and it's pretty loud. I mean, there's really no sense in turning the radio on, it's just fighting against the exhaust, and who wants to listen to a radio when you have a beautiful sounding exhaust like that anyway? :D I think chambered sounds the best, so I'm pretty sure yours wouldn't be too loud for me, but for you, flowmasters probably wouldn't do you any better.

Hey Ted;

What muffler do you have? I put the dynomax super turbo's on. They are louder than stock,
but not too loud (not as loud as an exhaust leak on the right side.)

Do you like the 3.54 gearing? Good acceleration??

I have Super Turbos. I should have the connections welded since I had to use 2.5"/2.5" adapters between the pipes (sectioned them to fit). About for places where leaks may need welding.

3.54's are definitely a step up from the 3.08's.

I have Dynomax headers, 2 1/4" true duals to Dynomax Boss Turbos (the really, really cheap ones - $15/ea.) but I had an H-pipe put in. Very mellow sound. I'm very pleased.

I'm running my 81 with no mufflers right now, just the cat, and it's barely any louder than with the mufflers.

Ted,

Installing 2 bullett style cats will make it a lot less noisy. Alternatively, if you don't want cats, you can use Walker QuietFlow mufflers instead of the super turbos.

I used to have super turbos on my 71 and it was too loud for me. I drive mine to work daily and couldn't stand the low rpm drone. I'm now running the quietflows and a set of dynomax bullet mufflers as resonators. Also have an X-pipe.

Hopefully for X-mas I can go WAY loud, and get my hedman header, 3 inch pipes and DynoMax Racemagnum Bullets.

My lord are those LOUD. My auto shop teacher has them on his sons built 76' 350 truck. If I get them on my vette, I'll get someone to record it. Those with a cam, BLAT BLAT BLAT!BLAT-BLA-BLA-BLAT!

The neighborhood will HATE me.
