If you could have just one book on your vette
I need to purchase a book on how to put humpty dumpty back together again. What would you guys suggest. The chiltons type book is a bit whimpy for what I want. I need vacuum line routing, heat/ac hook up, what actually goes where under the hood, etc, etc, etc. I have heard you guys speak of the AIM manual. Also, there is a book exclusively on 1969 vettes, is it worth the money. You see I have no problem spending money on things that actually make the MoneyPit go down the road. However, I hate having to buy things that I cannot bolt on to the car. Therefore, I want to limit my purchases of these "non-essentials"

Money;
Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM). This is what they used at the factory to assemble the car. IMHO it is the most definitive single source you'll find. Buy it first, by all means.

Use an assembly manual or get the book "How To Restore And Modify Your 1968-1982 Corvette" by Richard Newton. It is a really good step-by-step guide to restoring your vette.

I will agree with the above. When I bought mine, I bought a book that said "the most important tool you will need is CASH" to work on a Vette!

The Assembly Manual is diagram oriented. It identifies all parts by drawings and includes information such as spacing, amount of lubricant or adhesives and part numbers. The Shop Manual is an easy reference tool for torque, all specifications and repair of all components. They compliment each other well. Most Corvette parts suppliers offer the assembly manuals for about $20 and I purchased My Shop Manual from Ebay for $8 (hell of a buy) :cheers:

Here's the address that the forum links us to for books. The AIM is $19 and the Shop Manual is $28 http://store.yahoo.com/corvetteforum...--manuals.html

I agree the AIM is probably the best one to have. Another book that has a lot of good information (even if you are not the purist) is the NCRS Judging Guide. It's VERY specific and has great diagrams.

Oh Man! I got all excited when I saw 27 bucks for the shop manual. But for an 81 it's $80.00. Dooh!

Have you actually purchased one of these AIM's? Does it look like the same one Paul79 posted? Is there an index to it? I've asked this same
question in another thread looking for a good book cause the AIM I got stinks.. I'll buy another one as long as it's a good one.

The version I have is quite satisfactory. It compromises the original GM assembly blueprints; reproduced with permission of GM of course. I got it on EBay for $19.95. They are always for sale there....not really an auction per se.
Here is one for a 1969.

AIM from any Corvette vender for about $23. In terms of the shop manual, I highly recommend the year specific manual so that you don't have to wade through the material that does not apply to your year. This is the problem with the cheap 68-82 shop manual. I thought the vaccum reserve tank was supposed to be in my fender until I found out on the 79 it is a tube in fron of the radiator!!! The Corvette vendors want $100-$120 for year specific books. I bought mine direct from the publisher, Helm's Inc., for $60. Excellant deal for a brand new manual from the original publisher.
Their website is:

and you can buy it online from them.

Koz, Yes it looks like Paul's. There is an index but you have to search. The info is there, but I agree, it could be indexed better.
