Alwyn,
If your asking "is it`s easy to change" the answer is yes! As long as the gear on the shaft is still good. And you get ALL the little broken pieces.

Yup. What he said.
Plus-
In order to clean out the chips, it is best to remove the distributor and flush it out. Then you can closely examine the tach drive gear on the shaft. If it is chewed up, then you will need to buy a new main shaft. The main drive gear on the bottom is retained by a roll pin which you must punch out to remove the shaft. This is also a good time to check the housing bushings for clearance, and shim up the shaft end play to about .008 if it is sloppy. There are a lot of aftermarket parts for these distributors.
One of mine failed because it was moving in & out along its axis too much (excessive end play)- this caused a wobble which ultimately caused the gears to fail. It had plenty of lubrication. I bought the stainless coupler with needle bearings and a kit to install an "end play" limiter. It worked out perfect.

Assuming you have verified that it's the distributor and not the cable, the parts to do a complete rebuild will run about $100 + shipping. Most of the catalog suppliers offer rebuilts from $189 to $250. It's not a difficult job, but if you're not confident about it, it's probably worth considering the rebuilt unit.

Duh. Sometimes we overlook the obvious, eh? It wouldn't hurt to pull the cross gear to see what condition it is in. It's not adjustable- the coupler should bottom in the distributor when tight. I have come across a few that didn't due to thread problems, but most did.
