Default Balancer question

When I replaced the harmonic balancer a while ago I noticed that the replacement had holes drilled in it, my original had none.
Apart from that they looked identical.

Now, while reading Lingenfelter's book on modifying small blocks (a very good one for novices like me...) I start to wonder if I have got a balancer for an externally balanced engine...

Am I right? Should a normal smallblock balancer be without any sign of balancing?

Picture is from the book, from my memory the holes in my balancer were a bit smaller.
