Help, Need to Replace Power Antenna on 78
My Power antenna is messed up. THe motor constantly runs, and the antenna is locked up. How difficult is it to replace the whole motor/antenna mechanism. I've seen tons of them for sale on ebay.
Thanks,
Taylor

If the motor runs, then you know that part is good. The rest of it is pretty simple to rebuild, and the parts are cheap. You will have to remove the mechanism from the car either way, which is what your question was anyway, so here goes. I think you need to have your muffler dropped down. I did on mine anyway, but mine has flowmasters on it. Your's may be a little different. To get the unit out you need to remove 3???? bolts from below. 2 of them are to hold the antenna mechanism on, the other one is hooked onto the ground cable. (I think anyway, it's been awhile) Unplug the wiring and unhook the antenna cable. It seems to me that the hookups for these are behind the speaker in the rear. Then you need to use a 90 degree snap ring pliars to remove the nut from the top of the rear deck. This is the nut that goes around the mast. It should come out then. If you want some rebuilding tips let me know. Good luck.

i replaced my broken unit with a "rallye" brand from Wal-Mart,$40,works fine.you can eliminate the relay under the console, most new units have the relay built into them already.GM sells a replacement, which requires some re-wiring also, the price varies according to how well you know your parts guy,$110,$147 or $169.
