Headers in backwards????
Was told today that the headers on my small block had been installed backwards, as the heat sensor was on the wrong side hense the extended wire across the top of the engine. But on the positive side I was told that I had a non stock cam in hence the great performance. Confused the hell out of me, all this news and the car was in to get a high end audio system installed. At least these guys are real pros at it, cleaned the engine bay right up of old wires attached to nothing and the crappy aftermkt. a/c unit that was in when I bought it 2 yrs ago. :yesnod: :yesnod: :)

Stock exhaust manifolds are also referred to as "headers". Arent' the ones in question the rams horn style headers?

Re: Headers in backwards???? (Simon Alexander)
So your headers exit towards the front of the car?
If the temp sensor wire is crossinf the top of the engine the sensor is injstalled on the wrong head, the exhause has nothing to do with the temp sensor, it screws into the head!

Re: Headers in backwards???? (Alwyn678)
are they headers or "BLOCK HUGGER HEADERS" ?
block hugger headers focus exhaust downward between the middle of the heads.......this would be the *only* possibility I could think of as to switching them around....
example of the block hugger headers...

I think he means the HEADS are on backwards. That would put the temp sensor on the wrong side of the engine. No biggie.

Hehe, heads go on either side of the engine. Just put the temp sensor on the correct side, there's a plug in the location without the sensor. Radio dudes.....very funny....

LMAO! If the heads were on backwards the headers would be in the center V where the intake manifold is!, No how would they get the valves to work????
It is very possible that only one head is tapped for the temp sensor.
And BTW, I've heard that the passengerside head is a better place to measure water temps anyway....

ylose,
How do you like those headers? I'm thinking about a set. Do they hook up to the stock pipes ok (until I can afford new pipes)? What model number and brand are they? Performance gains?
Always looking for ways to :smash:

Re: Headers in backwards???? (rainman69)
these dynomax headers are what I have.....
that pick was off a website...block huggers are compact and don't give as good a flow, but are great for tight areas !

My sentiments exactly all, but you know after a week from hell and no vert. to drive in this incredible weather for this time of year up here, I think withdrawl started kicking in. Then they showed me their vettes today, pristine, and ready for the strip, and they agree with the sensor on the passenger side as well. Thanks for the replies guys I seriously thought that I was losing it.

It is possible to put the heads on the other side of the engine from what they are now and everything but the temp sensors will hook up just fine. If you put the driver side head on the passenger side it fits fine, and the exhaust fits fine. Same with the other way around. Some small block heads that are older style heads and have been drilled for the newer exhaust manifolds later on will not have the farthest bolt hole back to bolt on the exhaust manifold because some of the newer exhaust manifolds have the back bolt positioned a half inch or so farther back. When you put them on the other side you will still put them on with the exhaust ports facing the manifold.
