Default I installed new couplers for my Vararam CAI.

A big thank you to Craigster05 for his help from 2,800 miles away.
The smoother air flow from these couplers are producing even more noticeable torque.
I can feel the differents. Combined with the cooler weather, I am very pleased how my Vette is running now.
Night & day from the OEM coupler & intake.

im skeptical that there is any SOTP feel to just installing the couplers, BUT I do like them for appearance.

Would you care to share what size they are and where you got them? Thanks.

Well lets take a look:
The Vararam at over 40 is raming air into the OEM Accordion type coupler,
the air inside there is flowing but not smoothly.
Look inside that OEM coupler & look at the inner surface, it's a mess.
Ram air through a smooth surface creates a better air stream flow with virtually no turbulence.
Now Im no scientist but Commercial jet airliners engine cowlings are round & smooth for a reason.
So are those new couplers.
Gains of 2% here 2% there add up to more torque & much better performance then the unbalanced accordion coupler.
Result: The new coupler allows the Vararam to perform even greater then it already does.

Polished custom stainless steel intake cover by Pipedreams.

The 3.75 - 4 replaces the accordion piece.
The 4" goes toward the back (the throttle body) and the 3.75" goes toward the front (the MAF).
They are not a forum vendor. Do a search.

3 Ply Silicone Coupler : 3.75" ID
Selected options:
Color: Blue
Item price: $ 9.50
4 Ply Silicone Turbo Reducer : 3.75" - 4.00"
Selected options:
Color: Blue
Item price: $ 28.96

So...........if its such a noticeable performance gain, it would kinda seem strange to me why Vararam doesnt sell the unit with the smooth couplers.

I mean they cant be more than a couple dollars to add in to the kit. Im not marketing wiz, but that seems like a pretty easy thing to do.

So, are you going to tell us what size the couplers that you used are? They do make the install look nicer.

I'd been looking at that on my car and wondering why it wouldn't be a better arrangement to have a smooth airflow.

I want to ttt this thread in the hopes that Vararam will see it and chime in and explain if the smooth couplers really do add a power benefit as well as why they didnt include them with the unit themselves.

it does make sense, but with as high torque as we have, I think it would be hard to notice that small of a gain. If you do notice that small of a gain, I'm impressed.

I'm in no way doubting the gains. I just don't understand why GM and Corvette's engineers wouldn't "design" in this kind of coupler. It seems so simple, by comparison to a corrugated or accordion design, doesn't it?

I would guess that the OEM accordian coupler allows for thermal expansion differences between the engine and the induction.

Well, I doubt the gains (at least SOTP gains).

I agree that it does seem so simple which is why I questioned it in the first place ....esp from a GM standpoint.

Hel!, you would think that for GM, it would be cheaper (or at least the same price) to put the smooth couplers on vice the accordian style.

After all of the R&D and testing that GM did, that is why I have a hard time believing that simply smoothing out the couplers provide a SOTP difference in power.

As for looks though.......... it does look nice and I would like to do it myself if only the original poster would tell us all where he got them.

Thanks to all of you who are sending me PM's with nice comments.
On this forum we do not post non vendors links, it is not fair to the many that pay for advertising here.
PM me.

He did mention "cooler weather". I can believe SOTP feeling with the new couplers PLUS the cooler weather can give you nice gains in SOTP power.

hey guys, the engine does torque from side to side a bit. maybe that is why gm made them an accordian type coupler? just a thought.............cranky
