Best way to remove the rearview mirror
What is the best way to remove the rearview mirror? Also what to use to mount a new rearview mirror? I know it's probably simple. I figured I would start with the easy stuff and learn my way to doing the more complicated

What year car? Mine, you just give it a little twist and the ball comes right out of the socket. (Mine's a '69) :smash:

headkata,
Can't help you with your mirror but by your # of posts I assume you're new to the forum, so welcome! In the future, it is always helpful to let readers know what year/model C3 you have either in the message text/title or by your signature.
I assume you have a post '76 C3 'cause priors had the mirror mounted by bracket to the windshield frame header so R&R involves removal of one screw. I guess newer C3s have the glued to the windshield mirror hence your questions.

Headkata -- early rv mirrors mount in a ball socket on the windsheild header and are easy to work on. Later years are glued to the windshield. GM made the switch on the excuse that mounting the mirror to the windshield reduced vibration of the mirror.

The rear view mirror is held by some of the best adhesive know to man. That being said, all adhesives are sensitive to moisture, heat and solvents to some degree or another. Use a hair dryer, putty knife and release agent.

If you are just replacing the mirror on your 1979 and putting a new one on, you do not need to remove the mounting point that is glued to the windshield.
The mirror is held to the mounting point with a set screw. It is torx - a 15 or 20 bit if I remember correctly. Loosen the set screw and then slide the mirror off.
Most GM late model cars use this same mounting, so the mirrors are interchangable.
Good luck.

Mine won't stay up. Mirror, that is. I have a '68 and the inside mirror drops when I hit bumps, etc. Any easy way to tighten this up? I took a look one day and didn't see anything obvious. Thanks in advance for any help.
