Pulled out the Pertonix Ignitor II Put the points back in and.......
Now my car runs great...no backfiring and dying...I was disappointed that the ignitor only lasted 2500 miles...but I think I will stick with points for now..

You guys know I've been advocating points for years here on the Forum - a good set of points with a good coil and a good distributor curve is pretty darned tough to beat, and will perform flawlessly for a lot of miles with no maintenance.
We just did a dyno run on a 464 cid Pontiac. Standard point-style distributor and a set of used carbon plug wires. The engine pulled 588 hp @ 5800 rpm and 603 ft/lbs torque at 4400. We ran it up through 6000 rpm, and the points kept the timing steady as a rock. With the results I've been getting from points, I see no need to switch to the electronic conversions.

I switched from a Mallory Unilite converted stock dist. to an Accel dual point tach drive unit that I've for years and never used.
I will swear the car starts quicker, idles better and it's seen 6000+ with no bounce :yesnod:

I ran points for 17 years and have now switched to Mallory Unilite conversion. I made no other changes to the vehicle other than the installation of the Unilite module. My car starts easier and idles better and revs smoother and higher. IMHO, points when new will work fine but there is maintenance on them and they do wear out and then performance deteriorates.

I have single points in my 'vette and 'vair, duals in the BOSS. The BOSS sees 7000 occasionally and I have no problems with miss-fires. Now I like the MSD's with their programable features, I just haven't tried one yet...
