Do the inner yolks on the half shafts act as slip joints? I jacked the car up this morning and the left half shaft slid out of the third member about a quarter of an inch. If it isn't supposed to do this, what is broken?

They're held in with a c-clip. I believe that .250" is a little excessive. I was told .125" is the max play you want. When I got my rear back from Bairs with new stub axles there was very little movement in and out, maybe .015-.030. Sounds like at the very least you need some rebuilt stub axles. Hopefully someone with more rearend knowledge can confirm this. Good luck.

If you can see the yoke coming out of the rear end 1/4" the yoke is shot. I remember most posts here said the max movement is .080" not .250". You'll have to remove the rear to replace the yokes.

What year is your vette?? the GM supplier from 1976 to 1979 did not heat treat the yoke ends,which results in the ends getting mushroomed. when i took my diff in,the mechanic couldn't get the yokes out past the bearings,so new bearings and rebuilt yokes from Bair's were used.

My yokes were worn past the clips when we replaced them. I don't think my play was more than 1/4" - so... I bet yours are worn pretty badly too. My rear tires stood way out on the bottom before the fix as well.

crud, i was afraid of that. what does one of those stub axles cost? The right side doesn't come out at all. just another one of those things.

Check with Muskegon,Bairs,or Zip, You should change both since you have to go in there anyway. Also when the yoke grind down that much there's good chance the bearings need replacement too because the metal chips/dust gets mixed in with the oil and makes a fine lapping compound. This is one of those things that can balloon if you try and fix the yokes only. If it was me I'd send the whole thing into Bairs-$495 for general rebulid plus what ever the yokes cost + shipping.

I believe they cost about $130.00 - $140.00 for a rebuilt PAIR. New ones are about twice that amount. You will need seals and a rear end gasket too. You can get them from most suppliers. Mine came from Muskegon Brake.
I understand that this is not an unusual problem with the C3.
