Where are you guys installing the 6AL box? Pics would be helpful. Can they take the heat of the engine compartment on a extended basis? Any installation issues I need to be prepared for? Thanks , Phil

ZYALTR,
I mounted mine on the top of the inner fender on the pass side (back behind the overflow jug). Been there for 5 years. No issues. Mines a '65 that has the functional side vents.

I have not done it yet, but I have been wanting to possibly build a 450hp 383 that looks completely stock, and was going to mount the ignition box behind the vertical dash where the radio would go.

I have a 58 and I mounted the box to the radio with velcro. Comes in a roll with a sticky backing. Peel off the cover and stick it anywhere. That way you dont have to drill any holes etc.

On my '66 BB, inside the passenger fender-well above the battery. The first one lasted 3 years then fried. MSD rebuilt it, and its back in the same place. I love'em, but who knows.... I have an old spare that works that I carry with me just in case... How's that for trust...

MSD box can be mounted in the engine compartment with no worries.
MSD recommends that if it's mounted in the passenger compartment, you have air moving accross it to avoid overheating. They suggest a fan. I suppose an interior vent would work.
I was on the phone with them earlier today with that exact question. From their lips to my tappin' fingers...

I built a bracket to hang from the lower heater mounting studs since I wanted to avoid drilling holes. The MSD box sits between the firewall and the battery. Not the best location for airflow, but I'll see how it goes.

Wouldn't work in a midyear, but in my '58 I bolted it to the aluminum structure behind the passenger side kick panel. I was concerned about it getting hot, but even after extended cruises it doesn't get more than warm to the touch.

6AL location
Mine is on the firewall hidden behind the left fender. A tight spot, but good air circulation and no rain. I would worry about it being behind the headlight if it starts to rain. Although I don't plan on taking my leaky car in the rain, you never know...

If you haven't already purchased the 6AL box, you really don't need one just to make the distributor work. If you need the rev limiter function, etc. then you will need the box. I just hooked up an HEI module to the distributor and mounted it on the firewall on a little piece of bent up metal so air could flow behind it. If you want a picture I will need to E-Mail it to you.

I mounted mine INSIDE the car-Underneath the glovebox. You can't see it. Wires are short ( to Battery and coil). Electronics DON'T like heat so why put it in the engine compartment? Cooling Fins will work best if unit is mounted vertically. Dennis' box will stay cool up front- BUT electronics don't like the water either and the longer wires are a lot of extra work.

I had a few more electrical items to add so I used a carbon fiber sheet and mounted it to the firewall on the driver's side, under the fender. Picture linked to this thread:

Mine is mounted behind the passengers kick pannel. This makes the connections to the coil, Distributor and battery pretty easy on mine.

This is where i am mounting mine...its supposed to be in the same location where earlier versions were mounted in the cars that came with boxes.
