Default My 68 BB convert pics!

Finally managed to get some pics onto the forum.
Hope it works.
I will try to add some sig text at a later date and get a better pic as well.

The car was a original L71 or L89, but has now a non original 393 block, bored and stroked to 454, 30 over with the L71 heads with the original solid cam and solid lifters. It also was originally " british green ", but got repainted by one of the previous owners.
In a couple of years, I think, I will paint it black.
A lot of work still to be done, but it's already a fun driver.
Thanks for taking the time.
Gunther :seeya

Yes,
the shields are a must. Not so much for me, but for the kids.
My wife would tell me something else, if my kids would come with burned legs.
This shields have slotted holes and they stay well cool during driving.
So when we get out of the car shortly after a hot drive ( sorry, this big block must be driven hot ) , I guess that the shields did already protect.
I also had already circumstances, where visitors with their kids came very near to the pipes, and I keep on warning for specially the front unprotected header section.
Having fun. Gunther

Gunther,

very pretty car!
I love the pipes, though they are non original! (as are the gill chrome parts - they were only available in 1969)

I read your comments on the paint, to give you an imagination:
Here is my 1968 Convertible, and this IS a L-89 by birth.
The car is pretty well stock.
Here are some pics:

Hi Frank
Yes, I know that some of the chrome parts are not original 68, but still look good. Same with the Stingray script on the fenders.
I like to keep the car somewhat original, but will still go for some light mods, like a roll bar, seats with headrest and a decent pair of shoulder belts.
In my eyes, it doesn't make sense to have a daily driver modern car with all safety goodies ( nobody would buy a new car without airbag ! ), but drive the racer 450 HP + car with less than nothing ( only lap belt ! )
Regarding the side pipes, I always wanted a Vette with side pipes and since the 68 never originally had them, I guess that the Hookers are ok, they are a real eye catcher. I don't think theres a lot of side pipe cars around in Luxembourg.
I might be looking for a correct dated block in the future, but for right now, I need to spend too much money for just to get this one my way.
I also like to install a 5 or 6 speed gearbox with a overdrive to get the RPM on the hi-way to a decent value. 4000 RPM at 125 KM/Hrs is just too much for a 454 CI engine, isn't it.
Hey, I hope we can meet once , may be at a Corvette meeting in Germany, not too far away from Luxembourg.
Keep in touch. Gunther
Black is definately the colour I'm going for, thanks for this pics.

I think all 68's came with chrome gills, '69 chrome gills were optional.

Sidepipes and gill inserts were only available in '69 from the factory. However, many dealers imediately added these options to many 68's and 69's as both options were cheap at the time, and very popular. Anything for a sale! Those pipes are still available, although I haven't seen them with the header style ends. I believe bence13_33 has a set on his vette.

Congratulations on a BEAUTIFUL '68 big-block. I'm always thrilled to see these cars in Europe and other places!

In my point of view, anything you want to do to the car to improve it (to satisfy your taste) is okay by me, since you're paying the bills.

The side gill inserts are not original........so?
The side pipe covers are not original.......so?
Do they look good?......YES!

The great thing is that you're driving it!
Oh by the way.......it looks great to me........not that matters :jester

P.S. Is the water in the radiator from the Mississippi?
Oh, and the air in the tires......is that from St. Louis?

Hi 1bad69

The pipe shield where installed when I got the car.
The bolt studs are judt welded onto the pipes, the shields are just slotted holed sheet metal ( chrome ) and held with nuts to the studs.
I saw them in a whole sale catalogue, but need some time to find exactly, in which one.
They where available in different sizes.
Will keep you updated whenever I find the info back.

Thanks for all the good words.
I just love this car. It's exactly, what I always was dreaming of, since I first saw Vettes as a kid. American cars have some kind of a overkill mentality thinking here in Europe . This might be caused by the enormeous engines comparing to the mini 4 cylinder cars popular here.
That's why I like this 454 CI monster .
People just can't see the reason of having this 454 CI ( nearly 8 liters ) and over 400 HP in a 2 seater if they mostly drive a 1.3 liter 65 HP car.
This 32 year old car still kills modern BMW and Mercedes , and that is just unbelievable. :D
The nice thing is that the chrome bumpers make it look old to everybody, and the killer engine is a sleeper unknown to most.
I will never think about selling it anymore. ( I hope ).
