Where can I get acrylic lacquer paint?
I am about 90 percent done painting my 76. I bought PPG Duracryl acrylic lacquer about 2 years ago. I am just about out of paint and need more. I went back to the paint supplier that I bought the paint from and they have switched to Dupont and do not sell lacquer anymore. I called a couple of PPG paint dealers that were listed and they do not sell lacquer anymore. :mad
Does anyone know where I can get lacquer of any brand to finish up this job or can I use another type of paint over the existing fresh lacquer. I do not want to start over! :cry I live in the Chicago suburbs. What do I do?
PS. I found some Plasticote spray cans of auto. touchup lacquer but the white is just a little bit off and I think it will be noticable.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks! Greg

Re: Where can I get acrylic laquer paint? (76greg)
Greg..
This summer I needed some Laquer to touch up some stone chips.
I tried every paint store/brand and then the manufactures regional
offices in Canada. " Laquer is gone in Canada"..!!!!
Dupont was the most helpful, then transferred my call to a large
distribution facility in the U.S. and I spoke with a very nice lady.
She gave me the names of some of their customers that they had
shipped laquer to in the last couple years.
I phoned some of them and they either had none left or what they had
was dried up.
They did suggest that I try some paint shops/suppliers in a large city, as there
may still may have been enough demand for Laquer there.
I never did call, I gave up.
I did find some spray cans, (Canadian Tire Brand), and the match was
almost perfect. Number 10 - Classic White.
I bought 17 cans. I cleaned out 6 stores in three cities.
I did the touch ups and now have some for the future.
I also had a blister on the drivers door where the fibreglass had lifted.
I could not get enough of a good spray pattern from the spray can to do
a proper blend.
So, I punched a "very, very" small hole in the spray can. When the air was completely gone, I enlarged the hole and punched another hole in the oppsite
side and poured the contents into my paint gun.
I did this with a few cans, then finished the door. It worked great.
There are some other weird things about using this paint in your
spray gun. If you are going to try this, let me know and i will give you
all the ugly details.
(I won't go into the details as how I knew to punch a "very very" small hole
in the can. Lets just say that a larger hole will take about an hour to clean
you and the garage.)
In the end, this worked very well for me.
Good luck on you quest for laquer.
If you find some, could you let me know.
Barry

Greg; Are you painting your Vette a panel at a time? If so I would be concerned with color match if you switch brands or even if you find PPG, if it is not mixed 100% accurate you will have a mismatch. You cannot put urethane over fresh lacquer so you have to stick with the lacquer. We still have it available here in PA at least for now. How much do you need? Good Luck, Craig :chevy

I am painting the whole car at once even though the doors, hood, headlight bezels, t-tops and rear bumber are off the car. I just move around those pieces with the paint I have in the gun so there should be no color match problem. I have saved a little of the white PPG paint to blend in over the Plasitkote paint I have found in cans. I use the Plasitkote to fill in the white and top coat with the remaining PPG. I wanted to give the whole car a couple of coats of white and clear mixed 50/50 but I do not have enough PPG white to do that. That's why I needed more. So I will just give a clear lacquer coat. I would like to know if anyone has a source for about a gallon of lacquer.

As of 1 year ago it was still available in Maryland. And the touchup from the Suburban incident matched perfectly. :D I haven't checked more recently than that. Anyone know what the shelf life of lacquer paint is? ~Juliet

Greg; I can get Dupont lacquer for you, but I'm not sure about how to ship it. I think it is very expensive to ship paint because of the potential for leakage and spillage. Give me an e-mail if you want me to check into it. Craig :chevy
Juliet; I have used lacquer that was very old. As long as it stirs up OK it should be allright.

Juliet, I asked my local auto body supply jobber the same question when the ban on lacquer was first proposed.
He said unopened it should be stable for 10 years or more

I was still able to lacquer paint from a few local distributers. PPG said any distributer could also order it from the wharehouse. $160.00 a gallon, ouch! :mad I was able to finish my paint job and have plenty left over for any touchup work in the future. I ended up with DuPont but it all worked out. :D
