Default Automatic Transmission Shift Control

Ok, so in my other car (which there are no forums of this caliber for that I know of), is an automatic (4spd)... and after driving my dad's stickshift for a week, I can't tolerate automatic transmission anymore. I don't want to spend the money to convert it, because i'm saving money to put a stick in my vette (and other stuff).

So.... long story short... I'm looking for shift control for an automatic... so far i've found:

Shiftronic - http://www.traynor.com.au/pjb/shiftronics.html

Does anyone know anything about these/any experience?

It appears to me that it is designed for computer controled trannies. So it's not good for 700R4 and older TH models. I had a full manual valve body in my 700R4 in the past.

I'd say so, those ricer cars are very advanced. 1995 compared to C-3. The most advanced electronic part on my 79 is a radio. Commador 64K and the IBM pc jr. might have been on the drawing board. 8 inch floppy disks were hot new item for loading main frames. IBM punch cards were in use.

LOL!

Don't you need that big 5.25" floppy disk to boot up the ignition? or was that a rare option?

Yeah, so that thing will work for my application? Is there anything to look for in comparing one to another (if i can find another)?

Will it actually work well for racing/performance cruising?

I'm just so sick of doing like 35mph and knowing the transmission is in 4th gear, then having to slow down by beating the kiss out of my brakes instead of just downshifting.... I use the "2" and "L" gears, but 3rd gear is not an option... and i'd just like to have control of the tranny... Computers are great, but I think it has a different idea of what my car should be doing than I do...

Oh, and I use redline Syn. Trans fluid in there... should I also get a trans. fluid cooler? Or will this not put too much extra wear on the trans?

that will not put extra wear on the trans... it may actually make it last longer

I dont know what products are out for ricers for a performance stand point (it seems all that the sticker charged car owners out there care about is the way their car looks)

Theres an L, 2, and D... no 3...
So you can't downshift when your going fast and it counts the most....

I found this: http://www.levelten.com/store/import...shiftronic.htm

but its over $1k.... so I would rather find a original 5spd for that kind of cash... I was hoping for something for a few hundred...

Its a nice car, and not bad for a 4spd O/D auto... It shifts fairly nicely, and everything... It was my first car, so I had no idea how much i'd want a stick later on... I'd rather spend big $ on my vette.. but I drive the eclipse everyday, and race it once in a while... so gear control would be a dream come true....

Isn't there a simple way to electronically control the gear shifting in a modern auto trans? With like, switches or something?

I'm just tired of it going from 1st to 4th and back and everywhere in between when i'm just trying to sit in traffic or something... And I want to engine brake... my brakes take WAY too much wear....

yeah, i'll definately spread the knowledge around... theres probably plenty of people with autos that didn't realize for whatever reason they'd want to control the gears....

My excuse is it was my first car, and i barely knew how to drive when i got it, let alone use a stickshift... After driving a few stick shift cars around lately while my cars were in the shop/apart, I really hate autos...

Most auto transmission have a cable that is connected to the shifter, and that is what controls the gear selection.

For upshifts (on GM transmissions) that is controlled by a vacuum modulator.

Downshifts are controlled by a cable from the throttle on the carburetor.

To make a system that would let you control shifts via switches / paddles / joystick you would have to do the following.
Have electronic solinods or hydralic cylinders to control the shift selector and the downshift control. Replace the cables with controls.
If doing a manual system, it would be a matter of controling these solinods or cylinders via switches or what ever you want.
To have automatic control over them, you would need a microprocessor controling them. The processor would have to look at things like vacuum, throttle postion, speed, and RPM.

In other words, good luck.

hmm....
This sounds interesting...
Where can I find someone qualified to tackle this? a custom shop?
How much can i expect to pay for solenoids/controls?

Would I just need a new shifter? like a sportronic one?
