Default Follow Along Part II: A '61 Resto-Mod

Follow along as I do my next project: a 1961 body on a 2007 Streetshop frame with C4 suspension; a 2007 LS2 motor and a 2007 Tremec 5-speed hooked to a Dana 44. It will have a Rock Valley gas tank with fuel pump inside and a new Griffin radiator.

This is exaclty what I did to my last project, a 1965 coupe:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1590723
But this time I'll need a brand new steering column from Flaming River and custom headers to fit the frame.

Like last time, I'm an optimist and I expect this to take 3 months. I made an Excel spreadsheet on all parts, costs, suppliers and phone numbers which should help. I can just order everything I know I need right away.

My schedule had me doing yard work today but, darn, it's raining!

Here's 55Gasser's before pics:

Default Wow!

Two in one year, man you got stones. I will be following this one real close as I think the C1's make a great resto rod. Would you be willing to share your list and cost as this seems to be of % to a lot of people here on the forum?

I am very excited about the project! The car is a non matching # car so that made my decition about the rebuilt pretty easy since I want it to handle and perform great. See picture below with the bumpers and hub caps. The car in the background is my old 55 Gasser.

That is the color combination of my first Vette, a '61 in 1962. Have been trying to find the car for the last 20 years.

It is a frame (in this case an entire rolling chassis) from the Streetshop, a custom frame company in Al. Trey's frames require no cutting of the fiberglass and priced competitively. That's why I use them as opposed to the many other frame mfrs.

We're hoping this frame will be ready for Carlisle in 2 weeks. If so, I'll be showing it and hoping to get more resto-mod business.

Looking forward to the pics of your progress. Unless something has changed the street shop frame for a solid axle requires fiberglass cutting. Need to trim the front inner fenders and spare tire tub.

Hello,
Keep us posted on your progress. I am in the process of doing the same with a 64 tub, Jamison frame 94 Suspension with LS1 and 4L60. I hd some serious modifications I had to do wtih the tub floor, but it's all done now, thank goodness. We are going to Carlisle to fetch a bunch of parts, (mostly the ones that can't be seen) All the stuff like the interior will be new. Do you ahve any suggestions? Here is a pic of my progress, I hope to be finished by Jan 1, 08.

Using the 4L60 requires cutting the tunnel. That's why I use the tremec 5-speed.
Maybe I'll see you at Carlisle - I'll obviously be needing many parts too while there!

Thanks, Tim. It was a pleasure working with you. The information you provided along the way was very helpful too. Hope to see you at Carlisle!

Update: all body bolts removed except 4. Hood and radiator removed. E-brake removed. Temp sending unit removed. All bumpers and bumper brackets removed. tach cable and speedo-cable removed.

Let's see. What's left to remove? Those 4 bolts, the battery cables, oil press tube, clutch and gas pedal.
What else didn't I list? I used a nice checklist for the C2. Isn't there a check list for C1s somewhere?

Steering column
Wires from wiring harness to the engine/starter/etc,
Throttle linkage
The big spare tire bolt that holds the spare tire board down and screws into a bracket on the frame

If there are other items, you'll surely find them as you try to lift the body :-)

Here's another update. EVERYTHING is removed that needs to be removed to lift the body except for the steering column. I'll be taking out this whole column and installing a new Flaming River column.
What is the best way to take out the column?

I removed the seats and seat-belts and will put the bulk of the lift at the seat-belt anchors. I will have looser straps front (at radiator support) and back with very little weight on them.

I'll lift the body this Thursday and will list on Ebay the entire rolling chassis with the Corvette engine, 4-speed tranny and rear end and full suspension, brakes, gas tank and wheels and tires all as one unit. The frame is really nice as it had a body-off restore 16 years ago and has been in storage since.

Another option is to bring the rolling chassis to Carlisle with me and try selling it there. Not sure yet which I'll do.

You really have two options on removing the column. If you remove the pitman arm from the box, you should be able to rotate the box and slide it out the front toward the bottom. The other option is to wire it in place, and remove it with the body. It is not that hard to remove the pitman arm, and I usually take that route. I have seen guys try and lift the body over the mounted steering box, and while it can be done, it is an absolute pain!

Unless Flaming river cam out with a beter looking C1 column, the IDIDIT column is way better looking The one FR used to sell for C1 cars had all square edges on it and looked like crap. The IDIDIT column looked more like an original C1 column. We have been bitching at FR for years about the looks of their C1 column!
