Default Another barn find. They are still out there!

My friend found this car last week in an old garage. 1968 Convertible 34,000 original miles. Wrecked twenty five years ago and never put back together. They are still out there.

Amazing! But, because I was born in Newark, I would look inside for Jimmy Hoffa

Was there an asking price?

The selling price was below $5,000.00

That was a barn find. How about a field find of 16 Chevelles?

I always see these supposed "low" mile cars on eBay and always tell my dad how nice it was for his generation to save these cars for us....LOL. I CAN NOT believe how many of you guys fall for the 34,000 original miles etc. I see it EVERY day on eBay and on here. First of all if that car was wrecked 25 years ago...that would be 1982. So...in the 14 years that it was drivable they only put 2428 miles on it per year..NOT. The odometers in these cars only have 5 digits and have probably rolled a couple times. Its crazy how my 2004 Hummer and my 2004 Avalanche both have over 45K miles on them but I guess my generation isn't as nice as the previous ones and want to save them for the younger ones. Oh and my 65 has 18K showing.............

Most people did not drive much back then. My '66 has only 45,000 miles on it. So, it is possible that the '68 has only 34,000 miles.

I pass a garage find, in its a 58 Vette, apart for at least 10 years, but all there. The little old ladys said its her sons, she wants it out and she gave him my number, so far NOTHING but I am going to keep trying. They are out there.

Mileage? Who cares?

That unit in the picture, if you got it for free, did all the work yourself, you would end up with $40K invested in a '68 roadster minimum. These cars were notorious for rotted frames too. At least where I come from.

Yep, after the other guy bought it out from under my friend, my friend checked the frame with a screwdriver and sure enough, the frame was bad.

A lot of people bought a corvette as a second car (and still do), therefore the miles can be very low. Its not uncommon. For example, the previous owner of my '68 (original owner) only drove his on sunny weekends.

Yep, they're out there . . .

I live in a small town, 1800 population, and there's a '68 here in town that's been in the garage 25+ years that the owner was going to fix "one of these days". But so much time has gone by now that he's "gonna give it to his son".

I tried to buy a '62 in the small town just 8 miles north of me for at least 15 years, the car was in a garage for over 25 years, but the owner was gonna fix it up "one of these days". He finally sold it to someone from Jeff City a couple of years ago, although I know at least a dozen folks had left him their number in case he ever decided to sell. Go figure.

Finally, there's a '65 customized owned by a guy here in town that's never out of the garage for over 3 years, and another '65 in a small town south of me that the owner just passed away. I talked to him about buying it before he passed away, but haven't talked to anyone since, don't know if it's been sold yet or not.

And oh yeah, a friend of mine told me the name of a guy near Memphis where I used to live who has a split window coupe in the barn, wanted $10,000 for it 20 years ago, and doesn't need the money. I thought about calling him, but haven't. Probably still doesn't really want or need to sell it.

Yep, they're out there . . .

I just looked at a one owner 427/390 68. The owner wanted 6800.00. I went with the cash thinking it was a no brainer but the car was so rusted that the brackets in the engine compartment were falling off, frame gone.

There's a 58-62 sitting in a garage that I drive past every day on my way home from work. It's in some state of disassembly and I have no idea the last time it saw the road. What's worse is the house just recently burned and it looks to be basically a hulk from the road. I know a few people who are trying to get it, but I doubt the owner will let go of it, so it'll probably just sit there. Sad.

my 65 C2 has 56000 original miles . . . . all it takes is an owner or two that has a daily driver and the C2 is not it.

I sold a 93 Miata [Limited Edition] in 2005 with 9,000 original miles on it. One owner, and not her daily driver. Nice car, but my wife simply didn't drive it even on nice sunny days, once she had two little kids running around.

Yes, my friend bought all 16 Chevelles. He will be slowly moving them out. All of the cars have tags and titles but, no engines. I think all of the transmissions are still there. Half of them are SS cars. PM me if you are interested and I will pass your name to my friend.

Very true. Average mileage was 12,000 per year in the '70s. When you figured that most people lived much closer to work than today, the mileage stayed down. Driving 10 miles to work was considered a bit of a drive. 20 miles or so was a long drive, and you had to be making good money to do it.

So figuring 100 miles per week for work was 5200 miles per year, you can see the miles didn't add up that fast. And by the '70s, most of these cars had made it to weekend warrior status, with one or two trips to work a week, maybe.
