I know this subject has been discussed a bunch. But I want mine off. I saw on one post that you can use fishing line. I was wondering if anyone who took theirs off hurt the paint at all? I just called one of my dealerships body shop and they said that it is possible to hurt the paint. Do you think I should take it somewhere or do it at home? :confused:

If I recall, the last time I saw it brought up someone said to use a hairdryer to soften the adhesive that holds them on-- then it should be easy to get the line (fishing, dental floss, whatever) through it without bothering the paint. Then just use goo-gone to get the sticky off:)

You can use fishing line or dental floss and WD40 to remove the BSM. Spray the WD 40 on one end of the BSMs and gently work the dental floss or fishing line between the moldings and the body. Go slow and they will come off. The WD 40 makes the adhesive not adhere to the paint.

Chicky, It can be done but be careful.

It depends on how long they have been on and how much exposure to the elements the paint has had. YOu may get em off clean but see a shiny clean paint stripe down the side.

This happened to me after I removed the pinstripes from my black nissan. the pinstripes were over 3 years old.

Also CLEAN the BSM along the edges before the string trick!!!!
If you drag fishing line or floss through there and dirt goes with it :eek:

I shudder the thought. :D

Just be sure to be careful with the edges of the BSM's while "sawing" them off. I put a few nicks in mine before I realized what I was doing. I'm keeping them incase I ever want to put them back on.......it's very doubtful tho.....

Greg, how about removing men's bsm's? Just kidding :D ok, seriously i tried removing mine last week........ it felt kinda painful for the paint and just had to stop. Oh well, chicky, let us know how yours go. :cheers:

I used an adjustable heat gun - the type available at Home Depot for paint. I started at one end and evenly started to warm it up. My car is 3 years old and they peeled right off after a few minutes of warming. Then I used my finger to "roll" off the extra glue and lastly cleaned up the remaining glue with some all purpose cleaner. Paint was completely undamaged and you can't tell they were ever on.

Unless you have used heat guns in the past, I would recomend using a hair dryer. That's what I used, and mine turned out perfect. It might take a little longer, but I wouldn't want to risk the paint with a heat gun. Good luck.

I kept it on low heat - better to err on the side of safety and spend a few extra minutes heating it up.

GM shop manual says to remove stuck-on emblems with heat. I'd second the notion of not getting the paint too hot. And, kuddo on your taste, i.e. wanting those atrocities removed. best of luck! :yesnod:

I just had a local paint and body shop take them off when they were painting my car. It took them literally all of 10 minutes. They do that stuff all the time. (pulling off emblems, moldings etc).. No tools to buy, no worries about scuffing my paint, no hassles at all.. and they charged me NOTHING! Plus the buffed and waxed the whole car afterward.

If you want them off, just go ask, alot of shops (at least around here) are more than happy to help.

I'll be sure to post a pic of the new paint in a bit!...
