Default Fuel pump whine/noise

I just got back from the Mid-Tx Corvette and Chevy show in Killeen TX. When I got home, I had this loud whining noise coming from the fuel pump. There has always been a whine but never that loud. Does that mean it's geting ready to give out? Should have one on hand. And just how hard is it to replace? I'm a good home Mac. but have never done a fuel pump on a vette. By the way, is there a fuel pump ( after market ) out there that I can buy that will cut down on the noise?

Fuel pump noise stays on from the time you turn on the car. I have no loss of power and no Codes ! It's a 98, c5 coupe with A4.

Any Info would be most helpfull !!!!! THANKS !
I'm in the Dallas area

Also when you first turn the Key to the On position ( with out starting the car ), you can hear the fuel pump prime the fuel system. Then the pump cuts off. But start the car and it sounds likes it dose ( loud ).

Ok I have a update: I waited till car cooled down. I started it...BAM !!! it's back to normal. loud whine/noise is gone. let it run for about 10 min. I will know more tomorrow when I drive it to the HOOTERs in Grapvive of lunch with the CF gang. We'll see then if the noise comes back.

Went on the Wildflower trip last weekend outside of Kerville Tx and my Fule pump start whining as well. I had a service shop check it out and they said it was the fuel pump (drivers side). The cost to have it serviced ranged from $950 to $1,400. This seems very high for a part that is about $350.00 online. I plan to replair myself and based on the research I have done, it doesn't look too complicated.

Anybody have an do's and dont's on installing a fuel pump? Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks..

WOW, that is high ! I plan on doing it myself too. Lets hope some one has some good info on the how to. If your in the area maybe we should do them both at the same time. I have a 3 1/2 car garage. You know what the say two cars and heads are better then one. + I have the shop manuals for a 98 and a friend has them for a 2000 that I can use.

Find a link to the racetronix install instructions. It's pretty straight forward. I put a new pump in yesterday and without the harness install it probably would have taken around 2 hours at the outside. Other than the one small fire there were no real surprises. The pump and the harness were around $360 total.

I Just talked to Corvettes of Dallas and they can put a new fuel pump in for 179.99 part ( this is a after marked pump made by Walbro ). They say it is a better fuel pump. Flows at 255 LPH
Labor they say is about 3 Hrs to install and + one hour to drain and refill gass tank. So that's 4 hours labor cost at 80.00 a hour. I called and you can get the Stock fuel pump for about 550.00 at the dealer. I have not checked online yet but I will soon. Dealer said about the same install time.

SO... that's , 179.99 + 320.00 = 499.99

Default Quit Whining!

I had a low fuel pump noise in my 1993 Z28 for 14 years. I just thought that was the way it was supposed to be. At 132K miles, I would get some intermittent cold cranking-no start problems. Then---the car would start fine. Took it to my mechanic friend who ran a fuel line pressure test and the pump was faulty. He said it could have just quit on me. Some times they go on and run poorly and some times they just go out. The fuel pump was $175 and the labor to remove the fuel tank made the bill about $450. At least I'm not stranded somewhere. Get your fuel pump replaced.

The GRJ420 C5 pump is the highest flow pump available for the C5. The dealer you spoke to does not understand that all the Walbro GSS34x and GRJ42x series pumps have the same internal parts and specs. The 255L/Hr rating is at 43.5PSI @ 13.5VDC. The 220L/Hr rating is at 58PSI @ 13.5V which is the operating pressure of your C5. There is only one direct-fit pump available for the C5 unless you want this dealer to hack your factory bucket apart in order to install a generic application Walbro pump.

BTW a generic Walbro GSS34x series pump can be had for around $100.00:

Default No whinners

Looks like you can pick up a factory replacement module for $236 or $322 depending on left or right pump.. The racetronix looks like a good deal for $350.. I don't really need the performance and want to keep this quick and easy.. I think I will go for a drop-in replacement...

Buy an LPE intank Pump and your problem will be solved! 300.00 from LPE direct or call A&A Corvette and he will sell it to you as well for around the same price

Thunder Racing can sell you the C5-FPA w/o the harness if required which would be about the same price.

I've never noticed the fuel pump whine on Vettes, or any other car for that matter.

But I've noticed it on every previous generation GM full size truck/SUV (Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Denali, Escalade, Silverado etc...). I'm talking about the late 80's to late 90's. It is really really loud.

Please tell me I'm not the only one...

The left tank has a jet siphon pump which is supplied from the D/S electric pump. The D/S pump is the one in question here which is listed as MU1217 @ $322.47.

Actually Walbro changed the factory C5 fuel pump a couple years down the road. The first generation pump spun at a higher speed using a smaller gear set. There were too many warranty claims for noisy pumps which were OK. Later generation C5 pumps used a larger gear set and a slower speed to reduce noise complaints. This only applies to the C5's built before October 2002.

It is the pages of the GM Corvette manual, Since IN2FUN lives near me I though we would discuss working on this together offline, as other wouldn't be interested. However, you are welcome to join us.. It's in the 70's, warm and sunny, perfect vette weather and it would give you a break from those long cold Canadian winters :-)
