Default C5 MPG auto vs. Manual

I'm starting to look at getting a C5, I want the manual, but the wife wants to know about the automatic.

I was wondering what the MPG savings are if you ride the manual really well.

Hello, I drove my MN6 to Nashville and back and got about 31 mpg. I get around 18-20 around town. Pretty good in my book. Hope this helps

I've gotten as high as 33.5 mpg from my manual, and usually get 30+ taking it easy.

I got 36 mpg from SC to NJ. Intake/Headers/Exhaust only. I usually averaged around 26-28 normal driving.

Autos get a few mpg less than the MN6 on the highway.
The 6th gear really drops the rpms at cruise.

I get about 31-32 in the MN6. Got around 30 with the A4.

We have one of each.

The MN6 would get low 30s on the highway, 30-31.5 at 80 mph.

the Auto was 28-29 mph at the same speeds.

Both had the 3.42 rear axle

In my highly modified A4, I got 28.7 mpg on my trip from OKC,OK to Charleston, SC and that isn't bad at all.

BTW, my auto doesn't suck!

I get 18 to 22 in town with my MN6. I usually get 29 to 30 on the highway. But I have gotten 33 and 34 when I am not running as hard. I believe the MN6's were rated slightly higher milage than the A4's.

The driver will make the biggest difference.

I got 17.8 mpg with a 98 6spd half highway/city (I took it easy on the highway putting it in 6th at 80 mph). A few quick take offs in the city. Is it better to be in 5th at 80 mph or 6th at that speed for maximum fuel economy. Another question: Say you are coming off the freeway in 5th to an on ramp. Do you leave it in gear until before the car comes to a spot then press the clutch in or is it better to put it into neutral and coast along the off ramp? To maximize fuel economy and which is better for the engine.

Just like politics, some people have the same answer no matter what the question. There's not a lot of difference either way, mostly because you can't help revving in and between gears with the MN6. As said, most of the answer is in the driver.
