Default 10.89 @129.43 Stock with Halltech tune

We made the trip to Maryland International Raceway today. This was their last race of the season.

I met up with DGDOC and Ranger in the pits and we had a great time. I am sure that DGDoc will post his AWESOME run (On EMT's) later.

I made four passes which were 10.95 @ 129.60, 10.96 @129.28, 10.99 @ 129.03 and 10.89 @ 129.43. My silver Z-06 is stock with the exception of a Halltech Air filter and Jim Hall tune, which was done by mail. The car also utilizes QA-1 shocks, which eliminate wheel hop and ZR-1 17 inch wheels with M/T drag radials.

The air was good, but not great, since there is rain in the immediate forecast. I usually hit 130 to 131 MPH and most racers, that I spoke with today, were off by about one MPH. The track prep was excellent, maybe too good as I experienced a bog on launch, each and every run. My final run I launched at 4200 RPM's, which is the highest that I have ever attempted! All shifts were made at 7,000 RPM, with the exception of the 10.99 pass, where I dropped to 6800 RPM's.

Here are the splits for my best run:
60" 1.686
330 4.666
1/8 7.076
MPH 102.75
1/4 10.892
MPH 129.43

I still believe that the car can go 10.70 or better, if some of the bog can be eliminated! I discussed this with Jim Hall and he believes that there are a few things that he can tweak over the Winter, which may help in the Spring. I may also want to try the 17 inch Goodrich tires that Ranger has suggested. I want to thank my super pit crew: Herb Czarnowsky, Josh Jones and Mike Jones for all of their time and help.
Jim Hall thanks for all of the support and for AWESOME products that bring results!

Thats truly awesome.
Quite an accomplishment with so minimal mods, to go 10s.

So lets see.

Haltech air filter.
Mail order Tune
QA1 shocks.
Drag radials..

= consistent 10s!!!!

Congratulations once again, Wayne, on your very fine and consistent driving. You got everything from the car, the clutch and conditions.

Keep your fingers crossed for a rental to close out the season.

Congratulations! Ranger, along with you and a few others, are setting the bar pretty high!

What was DA?

Way to go Wayne. Folks getting our Stage 1 now ask for the same program I wrote for you.

Very cool.

Wayne - Congrats on your new P.R. today. You and Ranger are "plowing the path" for the rest of us.

Simply amazing to see a mildly "tuned" C6Z running 10's. However, as most C6Z owners can attest, it is more than just the car - it takes a lot of skill, knowledge, and experience to do what you did.

Terrific job!

Nice runs. Just an FYI

at 9am today the DA was -1773 feet

at 10am it was -1604 feet

at 11am it was -1501 feet

at 12pm it was -1508 feet

at 1pm it was -1420 feet

at 2pm it was -1368 feet

at 4pm it was -1325 feet

In other words, the air doesn't get much better. What were the times of your run?

Not sure the source of your numbers, dgussin1. I was at MIR crewing for dgdoc and measuring the DA on a well acclimatized TAG weather station. The DA we saw there was negative 500-675 feet. And the track surface temp remained in the high 40s throughout the day due to cloud cover.

Default Chicago Air

In southern Maryland the weather was a bit different than Chicago! The humidity was way up, due to rain in the forecast. I agree that the air was better than a 90 degree summer day. But like I related in the original post it was not perfect! Two weeks ago with better air, the car ran a 10.94 @ 130.97 and 10.94 @ 130.87. When you loose over 1 MPH and everyone else (known same track racers) loose the same amount of MPH, this is a good indication of the quality of air!

Wayne, you're right.
However, it isn't the quality of the air that was slowing everyone down. It is the aerodynamic impact of drag in cold dense air.

This is the same reason why almost no one hits home runs when it is cold out, yet home run totals soar in the summer when it is hot out.

It's just those darn inescapable laws of physics coming into play again.

Nice driving!
Also, the better you hook will often lead to a slightly lower mph.
What were your 60' times on the runs where you trapped 130.9+?

But I think the extra power the engine is making overcomes that!
How did you run ?

RobZ,
You are exactly right! But the hook up was about the same, on all except the last run, which resulted in a 1.686 and a 4.666 330 (Due to the higher RPM launch) On the other 3 runs the 60 was 1.73 twice and 1.74 once. The sixty's were identical 2 weeks ago and I believe that DGDOC is on the mark with the theory that the air was more dense, which slowed everyone's MPH down by one or more.
The point that I was trying to make was the reason the car did not MPH, the way it normally does.
On the subject of MPH, two weeks ago I went a 130.97with the Halltech(honeycomb) air filter in place. On the next run I removed the filter and made a pass with no filter, just to see what the result would be. The pass was an identical time 10.94 but the MPH was 130.87. My conclusion is that you are a little faster, but much safer using a Halltech filter!

Very impressive runs! Anyone know exactly what the Halltech tune changes? I'm assuming turning off CAGS, disabling Torque Management, adjusting VE for the new intake, removing some fuel, and maybe a little more timing up top?

I gottcha.
I notice when my mph is slighly down it sometimes is due to the fact that my 60' is better.(when the air is good on both days).

Correct. And as our cars get faster, the impact of these factors starts to become more important.

Anyway, let's make this a separate post and keep this on Wayne's outstanding performance yesterday.

I'll post some additional information on the effects of aerodynamic drag, air density, and temp in the next few days.
