I am not modifyiing my script covers by putting a hole in them. What I have decide to do was to make something that would use valve cover spacers in order to accept some breathing. Below you will see my set up. I figure I can polish the aluminum spacers. I can polish the stainless steel fittings and tubing I will be using to get to a breather.
Will be a few weeks.....but here is what I have so far and you can see why I do not want to modify the covers.

I've seen quite a few of these covers that have been cut for a breather or PCV at swap meets and on Ebay for less money than what a good used one sells for.

I really like the polished script covers that firstgear has, did you ploish or buy them? I want PCV and breather holes in each as well. If I can find a tastefully done mod, then I'll go with that. Then I can use a funnel to fill oil. Right now I've got chrome covers and intake without breather tube.

Its your car, its your parts, its a free country and you have the right to do whatever you wish. Me personally, I would NEVER, cut, modify or drill a finned alum Corvette script valve cover. NEVER!
As already mentioned, I would seek out an alternate location for installing a method of crankcase ventilation such as a hole in the intake manifold.
I have a SB400 with Rochester FI in my 56, and it has early 9 fin valve covers--------------VIRGIN!
Several years ago, I saw an article in HOTROD mag about how someone put a hole in the rear of a later block (without the rear hole for a road draft tube that is in 67-earlier blocks) and then fabricated a crankcase evacuation setup.
Looked good to me. So I went to my local engine recycler and got him to loan me a JUNK 350 block. I used that junk 350 to prototype a similar evacuation setup. Once I got the hole and plumbing done, I cut a hole and installed the same plumbing (for a home made road draft tube setup) in my 400 block. I now have a SB400 with a road draft tube for crankcase ventilation and my valuable 9 fin covers are untouched!

These are not very hard to come by. Every decent swap meet I go to has a set or two for sale- usually quite reasonable.

This is the thread with pics:

I had been keeping an eye on Ebay for a while, pairs in nice shape seem to be going for $150-$175. There are a lot for sale most days in that range so they do not appear to be rare yet. Managed to snag one cover for for $80 shipped. Just arrived today, looks decent. My plan is to drill a hole in the rear, similar to JohnZ's photo to run the tube. My bubba will be mostly hidden under the ignition shields so it should look reasonably stock. I currently have the original covers and engine, don't want to molest any of that.

You have to drill into the web site to find them, but they have a nice finned Corvette script cover, with the right baffles inside (and a perfect location) for connecting the breather that connects to the aircleaner. It appears that the hole will be on the side wall of the cover, not on top of the script or fins. You still need a manifold that can take an oil filler. But these seem to solve the problem with later model blocks missing the vent behind the distributor.

After reading all the good info, I am not sure if my current set up is correct. I've got a 64 327 with an Elderbrock Torker intake. I am using carb base for PCV to one valve cover and air cleaner base to the other cover, same size hole as the PCV valve. Before I explore too far for the holes in the covers vs. drilling intake, is my current set up adaquate?
I have a hole in the back of my block behind the distributor with a freeze plug looks to be about 1.25" is that for the road draft tube / PCV? I have another hole in the front on my intake with another freeze plug, same size. Can that be used for oil fill and air intake?
Thanks
Steve

A picture of the drilled manifold, and one with an air cleaner in place:
