Hinge Pillar question
Does anyone have pictures of the door hinge pillar area without the surround mounted? I looking for pics of outside top showing the pillar panel attachment to the "A" pillar bonding strip and the inside showing attachment to the birdcage.
I'm trying to reassemble a 63 vert and think I've got an alignment problem somewhere cause my surround is riding too high at that point and the pillar "tab" isn't even close to the two holes in the birdcage. Thanks. Paul

Great pics, but....
Hey, Thanks for the link! The pics will be VERY helpful as I progress, but they didn't show what I was looking for.
This may be a stupid question, but I'm piecing together the pillar cover and I don't know if it bonds to the strip riveted to the A pillar (if so, a piece is broken off that I will need to fix) or whether the surround bonds to the riveted strip and I just need to blend the pieces after assembly.

Wayne, I think he is talking about the little piece of bonding strip at the top of the pillar that is riveted to the pillar and then the cover is bonded to that. It is a very small piece about 3 inches long or so and breaks easily when the cover is removed.
I don't think I took any pics when I rebuilt that piece.
I think the 3rd photo is as close as I come

Scott and Wayne, Thanks for the help. I've checked the pics on your links and what I am trying to figure out is if the top of my pillar cover is broken off. I THINK that it is broken cause it seems that the underside of the pillar bond to the little riveted strip on top of the A pillar and then the surround bonds to the top of the pillar cover but this all was "bubba"-ized before I got the car so I'm not sure. It looks like the pillar cover could just be blended into the riveted strip and the surround bonded to the whole conglomeration. I was hoping a pic or two would clear it up. I sure hope some of that makes sense .
I'm going to try and get a pic this weekend on the area and post some maybe someone can tell me if I need to buy some new pillar covers. Thanks. Paul.

I was finally able to take a picture of the area. If you'll notice the top of the pillar looks like it is broken and missing a piece. If anyone can confirm this, I would appreciate it. Paul

Yes, there is a small piece missing that goes up the pillar a bit and you are missing the bonding strip along the base of the winshield too. It looks like someone made this piece or you have a bit of the surround still attached to it. I have a photo in my album that shows this exact piece, its just on the opposite side of the car.

Here are two pics from my late-May '63 convertible.
It looks like yours might have been repaired at one time or they changed the way they made them. You can see the bonding strip along the lower windshield.

Thanks!!
Hey, Seaside, those pics are exactly what I was looking for. I knew something wasn't quite right and wasn't sure if it was the A pillar bonding strip or the pillar cover that was broken. The pictures make is very clear what the problem is.
Truly, a picture is worth a thousand words
Thank you Scott and Wayne! Your website pics are going to be VERY helpful to reassemble this crate this winter! Got them bookmarked for future reference.
I really appreciate the help!

By the way Paul, I noticed from my pictures that there is a little water drain relief molded into the steel cap at the top of the pillar. (look at the little inverted "v"). I had never seen that before.
On your picture it looks like that piece has been repaired and welded solid across the front. You may want to re-create that relief to allow any trapped water to get out.
You can see by my windshield corners what happens if the water can't get out. Fortunately those little perforations at the corners are the only rust on my car and they have to be repaired before the front end can go back on.
I'm definitely going to be rust proofing that bird cage, inside and out, before putting her back together.

Seaside, I'll check on the water drain this weekend and see what I can do. It appears that the drivers side was involved in a pretty major crash at some point and repaired. It's solid but some of the repairs are flat ugly. I'm not sure what can be done to straighten some of this stuff out or even if it's necessary since this is just a driver for me. I suppose that as long as it's solid, I'll just have to live with it. Thanks for the heads up.
